The Flint National Guard was organized on November 3, 1861, in order to provide support for the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The organization lasted until 1865 and saw service in every state in the Union. In total, over 1,000 men were drafted into the National Guard in Flint. During its time as a national guard unit, the Flint National Guard acquitted itself well and received many commendations from both the United States government and fellow soldiers. Some of these honors include being awarded an honorary commission from General Ulysses S. Grant, becoming one of only two units to be accepted into Stroud’s Hall Military Academy at West Point after being rejected by other military academies; receiving medals for heroism from both President Abraham Lincoln and General George McClellan; and participating in several battle tours throughout the war. In addition to its national guard duties, Flint also had a local militia component which functioned as law enforcement for their city-owned firearms stores and arsenals. This auxiliary force was known as The Volunteer Militia or City Guardsmen because it was not part of any regular army or navy forces that fought in World War I or II. The City Guardsmen protected citizens from crime while also providing security for city buildings such as police stations and post offices. Throughout much of its history, Flint's national guard unit played an important role in keeping our community safe from violence and disorder – something that is still evident today with all that has recently transpired here in Michigan’s largest city (population:1 million). On July 2nd 1945, President Harry S Truman signed legislation creating the National Defense Service Corps (NDSC), which would provide manpower for defense purposes through secret registration procedures beginning on October 20th 1945; this program lasted until September 9th 1946
