The Van Gelder family came to America and started a small farm near what is now known as the Fort Wayne Arsenal. They became interested in coffee and sent their son, Pieter, to Java to learn about beans and roasting. He brought back some of the best coffee beans that had ever been grown, and started a small business making java cups and bagels. In 1829, he moved his business to what is now known as the Flint Brewery. In 1837, Pieter's grandson Cornelius took over the brewery and changed its name to Lansing Brewing Company. Lansing Brewing produced coffee until 1940 when it was sold to National Coffee Corporation. National Coffee Corporation produced coffee until 1978 when it was purchased by Keurig Incorporated.
