The Coast Guard was founded in 1790 as the Marine Militia of Michigan. The first coast guard station in Flint was established in 1819. The Coast Guard men and women who served in Flint were some of the most important members of our community during this time. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect our coasts, seas and waterways from danger by providing law enforcement, maritime sanitation, public health services and other resources needed for the safety of coastal communities and vessels.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Flint, Michigan was founded on December 16, 1944. The group's first major effort was to provide weather protection for the city during the 1945 Flint Flood. The Auxiliary has since grown and become one of the most prominent law enforcement organizations in metropolitan Flint. It operates a variety of units including a marine unit, port security unit, an emergency response team and a boat squadron.
Flint, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. It is the second most populous city in Michigan after Detroit and has a population of 617,731 as of 2017. Flint was established in 1837 as a trading post by John Lathrop and other early settlers on the lower Great Lakes region. The town was named for General George Washington's aide-de-camp, James Wilkinson Flint, who had accompanied General Wayne during his campaign against the Ottawa River Shawnee Nation in 1794. The city became an important manufacturing center in the late 19th century due to its lead production from local mines and its access to natural resources such as lead ore, zinc ore, and copperas well asshipbuilding yards that built vessels for both world wars. However, after World War II Flint's economy declined because of military activity in nearby Detroit and GM's decision to move production from Flint to Mexico City. In 2009–10, Flint saw one of the largest riots ever seen in America when people rioted over changes made to its water infrastructure following Macomb County's switch from using Lake Huron water to saved money. The violence left six dead and more than 200 injured
The Coast Guard has been providing maritime security and rescue services since 1790. In 1925, the Coast Guard became an independent service with its own Headquarters and Service Department. The first Coast Guardsmen were sworn in at Governors Island on September 12th, 1925. The mission of the Coast Guard is to protect life and property on the U.S. coastline by performing search and rescue functions as well as provide law enforcement assistance during emergencies. In 1995, Congress authorized the creation of a National Sea Grant program which provides grant money to states to help improve coastal transportation infrastructure including seashore management, navigation, public safety and environmental protection initiatives. Grants are also given for coastal erosion control projects as part of this program. Since 1978, when a donation from businessman Alain Journelle made it possible for the Coast Guard’s predecessor organization – the Revenue Cutter Service – to purchase two Catalinas (CGC-5) patrol vessels, gifts have become important symbols of support for both organizations. Each gift has helped further develop one or both agencies’ missions while increasing their efficiency and capability; in some cases these gifts have even led to new vessels being purchased or upgraded! Flint, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Genesee County. The population was 753,715 as of 2017,[1] making it the third-largest city in Michigan and the fifteenth-largest city in the United States. Flint's economy depends largely on its manufacturing base, which includes aluminum production, automotive manufacturing, and shipbuilding. The area that now makes up Flint was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century as part of what is now Wayne County. Early villages were located near what is now downtown Flint and other areas around Lake Huron. In 1805, General Anthony Wayne founded Detroit as a new capital for Upper Canada after Great Britain abandoned Toronto; during his time as governor of Upper Canada, he chose to move Detroit to central Michigan so it would be nearer to American settlers. On December 3, 1813—the day after Detroit became an American city—Flint was incorporated as a town in Shiawassee Township.[2] In 1801, when George Washington was elected President of the United States and moved from New York City into Philadelphia without taking possession of any lands east of Pennsylvania Avenue (now known as Constitution Avenue), he ordered Samuel Morse to establish a telegraph line from Baltimore to Philadelphia using land owned by John Ambler at West Point on Long Island Sound.[3][4] This made possible easy communication between Philadelphia and Washington during the Revolutionary War and early days of our country[5]: On November 2nd 1800 Congress passed act No 9 Geo 5 c 4 “An Act for establishing Post Offices within certain parts or districts lying within said State” & ordered Colonel Isaac Brockman Surveyor General for this purport with directions how they should be situated & under what restrictions etc…. These Post Offices were soon established throughout all Province excepting those Particulars mentioned herein viz: Western Ontario where they continued till 1830….. By order dated march 3rd 1802 Gov G W Bush designated Major General David Hunter Commandant at Fort Mackinac who orders Brigadier General Edward Dearborn Commandant at MichilimackinacWest Point until his departure thenceforward…… [6]: The first post office open in Flint was at Indian Village on Macomb River north of present day Huron Road:[7]: Morse had been required by law to establish a postal service between Baltimore and Philadelphia; but because no one wanted to pay for it (the cost being about $65 per year), he offered instead to send messages using dogsleds over snow drifts covered in ice. A dog sled trip from Boston took place on December 12th 1795,[8]: The first steamboat built in America arrived here on November 30th 1840 from Buffalo Bayou opposite modern day Midland City with 143 passengers including twelve Chinese immigrants called "The Drifters".[9]: This event marked an important milestone not just because it demonstrated steamboats could be transported across water but also because it helped spur development along both coasts – Ford Motor Co., today's largest automaker, began operation two days later[10]. Although small compared with some future megachurches or major airports such as Denver or Las Vegas today,[11], then-Flint leaders saw this boatyard activity not only as a means necessary for economic growth but also something that could contribute positively toward creating community spirit among residents who worked together productively side-by-side
