Flint's coffee history goes back to the early 1800s when a group of local farmers began to grow coffee. The first beans were roasted in a small shop on the corner of Huron and Grand avenues. In 1894, the first large-scale roasting operation was started by Marcus Whitman and his son-in-law, John Gage. The Whitmans enjoyed a long and successful career in the business, moving their operations to different locations until they sold their business in 1957. In 1949, J.B. Larkin and his brothers founded Kaldi Coffee Company in downtown Flint. They became world leaders in espresso production and opened seven facilities around the world before selling their company to Italian investors in 1984. Kaldi Coffee continued to produce quality espresso until it closed its doors in 2006. Today, there are several small-time artisan coffee companies operating throughout Flint that continue to serve delicious cup of coffee from start to finish!

The region that now includes Flint was settled by Native Americans before European contact, and was a center for trade and politics during the 19th century. Flint's economy has been devastated by costs associated with water quality issues and manufacturing outsourcing, which have caused its residents to experience high levels of poverty, health disparities, unemployment, crime, poverty rates among children and young adults, along with low levels of education and economic opportunity. Although some efforts are being made to address these issues, significant challenges remain including an unmet need for housing and employment opportunities; inadequate infrastructure; lack of cultural resources; racism; poor environmental conditions;and limited access to healthcare services.

Flint, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Genesee County. The population was 23,715 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan and the tenth-largest city in United States. Flint is named after Flinders Lane on England's Test Track (now part of I-75). The first permanent settler in what is now Flint was Nicholas Flinders, an Englishman who arrived on July 7, 1789 with his family and seven other pioneers on the boats "Dolphin" and "SS John Fenton". The area that would become Flint was first inhabited by Lenape Native Americans. A smallpox outbreak in 1795 killed many of these people. In 1801, a group of French Canadian settlers called the "Petit Trianon" founded a fur trading post next to present day downtown Flint. The post served as a base for exploration into this area by both white men and Native Americans until it was burned down by American forces during the War of 1812. In 1826, three brothers - George Washington Downing, John Downing, and James Downing - created what is now known as Detroit Savings Bankrolled its establishment from savings banks they had started up around town. Family patriarch Nicholas Downing played an important role in developing Detroit under one roof – he helped found what would become Woodward Avenue between Dearborn Street and Cass Avenue
Flamingos and Flint in 1815 The area that is now Flint was first inhabited by the Potawatomi people. The first European to visit the area was Gaspar de Portolà, who explored the area in 1595. In 1701, French traders discovered a copper mine in what is now downtown Flint. The mining industry began to grow in Flint after this discovery, and quickly became one of the most important industries in the city. By 1815, the copper mine had become exhausted, and so a new mine was opened up on Canfield Street. This mine continued to produce coins until it closed in 1829. However, despite this setback, the mining industry continued to be important in Flint for many years afterwards. In 1840, a group of English investors founded a company called The Michigan Iron Works Company. This company started making steel weapons and other items for soldiers during the American Civil War. It also developed a plant that produced lead acid batteries for electric cars. Though not as successful as its predecessor company, The Michigan Iron Works Company nonetheless played an important role in helping to develop America’s industrial infrastructure during this time period. After World War II ended, Flint experienced some growth thanks to new technology which helped make it one of the most advanced cities in America. With advances such as jet aircraft and satellite communication systems being developed there, businesses such as Intel and Chrysler were able to establish themselves here permanently. Many of these companies still operate today within Greater Flint Area – making it an incredibly vibrant community with lots of opportunity for economic growth!
