The Flint, Michigan (MI) Army Garrison was activated on November 16, 1914. The Garrison served as the primary military installation for the city of Flint from 1914-1920. In 1920, the Garrison became the main facility for training soldiers in central Michigan. In 1926, the Garrison was redesignated as the Military Personnel Command and Headquarters Unit Fort Wayne. The fort was closed in 1963 and most of its buildings were demolished in 1966 to make way for a new shopping mall.
Flint is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Genesee County. The population was 3,787 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan and the largest in Flint Township. Flint is also home to the University of Michigan, one of the world's most respected universities. In addition to its economic significance, Flint has been known for its architectural landmarks including Chrysler's buildings on Grand Boulevard and State Street and Ford Motor Company's plants on White Riverfront Drive. The term "Flint" can be traced back to 1734 when British traders visited what is now Flint and named it "Fircourt". The first mention of "Flint" as a town occurred in 1831 when David Griffiths established a trading post there with other settlers from what is now Huron County. By 1835, all settlement within present-day Genesee County had ceased except for about 50 families who founded what became known as Flinton Township on land east of modern-day Midland City on April 6th, 1835. At that time there were only two Indian villages in this part of central Michigan: Soohegan (now Sault Ste Marie) and Kalkaska (now Kalamazoo). According to federal survey reports filed with the US Census Bureau during 1840–1841, “Flint†counted 396 people living here who paid taxes totaling $4146; “Geneseo†counted 524 people living here who paid taxes totaling $8992; “Midland City†counted 263 people living here who paid taxes totaling $27275; “Southfield†counted 346 people living here who paid taxes totaling $40711; but no towns were listed under either name because they did not exist yet. It appears that early residents simply designated their own village or township equivalents when filing federal tax returns. In 1845 Stephen Mather organized five companies called The Warranted Landowners Association which purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) northward along Michigamie Creek from John Derrybaugh for £4000 sterling ($6800 USD). This land became known as Mather Township after him. On February 1st, 1847 – less than one year after organization – Mather incorporated his new township as Flint Township by Order of Court #5452 having surveyed lands lying between Ottawa Road/White River Road intersection east side thereof and North Branch Ottawa River toward East Side of White River Road thence southwesterly about 2 miles to its mouth aforesaid … . It should be noted that due to political instability resulting from raids by Indians led by Tecumseh during this period some residents fled or were forced out of their homes while others chose to stay behind despite great danger posed by these Indians……………. Mather was well aware that if he left too many settlers behind he would become vulnerable to attack so he decided against incorporation until he could ensure adequate security for himself and his family………..This order helped pave way for later MI Act efforts towards creating municipal government throughout entire state………………………………………. For over 60 years following its incorporation intoMIAct on March 12th 1954 as et al., Flinton Township served primarily as an agricultural production center with limited industrial development……………………………………….
