Flint, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the only municipality in Genesee County. The population was 99,711 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth-largest city in Michigan and one of the county's ten most populous cities. Flint is also its largest metropolitan area with a population of 2,933,063 as of July 1, 2018. Flint was first settled by Native Americans in 1781 as part of what is now Ontario County. A post office called "Flint" was established in 1816, and remained open until it closed in 1892. Flint became an incorporated town on November 4, 1907 – one day after GM moved its operations to nearby Lansing – with a population of 382 people. Flint’s population reached 25,000 by 1870 but declined as many people moved away during the last years of slavery in America before emancipation (1863). After Reconstruction ended with white rule over black Americans following Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1865, many African Americans migrated into Flint because they could find work doing odd jobs or working as sharecroppers on sugar plantations near Mobile Bayou between December 1860-May 1865 (the end date for Union military occupation). As early as 1870s there were reports that gangs roamed through downtown areas “striking negroes at will who appeared belowground” while liquor stores flourished with ale being sold at $1 per bottle starting in 1870 During Prohibition era (1921- 1933), bootlegging activity intensified because prohibition made alcohol illegal everywhere except small amounts distributed among private citizens who could still purchase it illegally using methods such as buying bulk materials smuggled into country from Canada or Mexico
