There is a long and varied military history in Ferndale, Michigan. The town was first founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1795 as Fort Snelling. From its inception, the town served as a military base for the Indian War of 1812 and as a center for fur trade. It later became a major depot for the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1865, Ferndale was renamed Fort Wayne after General Ulysses S. Grant, who had been chief executive of Indiana during the war. The fort remained an important garrison until 1991 when it was decommissioned and sold to private owners. During World War II, Fort Wayne played an important role in the Pacific Theater of Operations by providing security for the strategic port at Naval Base Kitsap located on Puget Sound. The fort also housed airfields used by Allied bombers during 1944-1945 and 1945-46; these were all destroyed in fire or bombing raids in 1945. After the war, Fort Wayne reverted to its original name of Fort Wayne and continued to be used as a commercial center until it closed down in 1980 (although portions of it still exist). Since 1990, however, there has been sporadic activity atFort Wayne’s abandoned military installation due to efforts by local residents to keep it open as an interpretive park dedicated to veterans and their families from World War II through present day. In 2002-2003, restoration work began on what is now known as “The Old Post Office Building” which served as both headquarters for United States Forces Europe (USFE) during Operation Enduring Freedom and also served as home office of Northwest Michigan Regional Command (NORWECOM) responsible for all southeastern Michigan counties north of Lansing County; this area included Ferndale Township along with most of Dearborn Heights Township within that region]. This location would become known as "Hinkle's Corner" because James Hinkle built his sawmill there around 1830s (the original name for this spot). The first school in what became Ferndale Township was built on South Third Street just east of present day Washington Avenue within two years of incorporation on September 26th 1840 by Mr John Witherspoon from Ottawa County . It operated until about 1870 when a new school building was erected at Main Street & Third Avenue (now Washington Ave.) It served grades one through twelve until 1903 when it burned down after being damaged by a fire set by students during an all night window display at Western ore mine nearby (. Today you can still find pieces of this building among some rubble left over from that fire). By 1881 there were fifteen businesses located in what are now central streets surrounding Hinkle’s Corner: Second street included; Indian School Road ran north-south; Spring Street east; Grand Boulevard ran south-northwest; Washington avenue extended northeast to its current terminus at Cherry Lane; North Third street included only part of present day First avenue; North Fourth avenue extended west from its current point east along present day Park Ave.; Vinegar Hill Road terminated at Woolworth Drive near today’s corner store off First avenue) On January 5th 1882 another plat for lot 2was filed with township government for an area lying north sideof Second street between Harrison and Maple Streets (now Woodward Ave.). This block would becomeknown as "Fenton's Corner" since George Fenton built his flour mill there about 1860 (). A second school opened here in 1886 named Fenton Academy which later merged into Central High School which opened up next door in 1907 During this time also mining began taking place adjacent to town center close to where present day Woodward Ave & 2ND ST stand today - contributing greatly towards early growth rates for both townships together! Today much remains unchanged from those days including remnants of Fenton Mill complex still visible behind some houses today!
