Ferndale is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the east side of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 16,624 at the 2010 census. It is home to two major art museums – the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Ferndale Museum of Art – as well as several smaller museums and galleries. The city also has a strong creative economy, with its own production of arts and crafts products, music and film production, food services, real estate development, and restaurants. The history of artisan coffee begins with Nicholas-Jacques Conte Sr., who opened his first coffee shop in 1825 in what is now downtown Ferndale. In 1828 he sold his business to his son Nicholas-Jacques Conte Jr., who continued to run it until it was closed in 1892 by his father. At that point, Ferndale's only coffee shop was located on Main Street (then known as John Fenton Avenue). In 1865 Nicholas-Jacques Conte Jr.'s grandson Laurent began trading coffee from a small house on University Boulevard north of downtown Ferndale. By 1907 Laurent had built a large warehouse near present day First National Bank building on Third Street west of town center that served as his business headquarters for many years; this structure still stands today (although its facade has been replaced by new construction]). In 1911 Laurent moved his business to what is now Fourth Street west of town center after purchasing an old millinery store building there from Mrs. Lillian Kendler; that structure still stands today (although its facade has been replaced by new construction). In 1916 Aurelien De Grave opened La Boulangerie du Nord—the first commercial Belgian-owned bakery in America—in what is now Fourth Street south of town center; that building still stands today (although its facade has been replaced by new construction). In 1928 Maurice Carême opened Emmanuel café—the first French-owned café in America—in what is now First National Bank Building east of downtown Ferndale; that building still stands today (although its facade has been replaced by new construction). By 1944 all but one family proprietorship connected with artisan coffee had disappeared within ten years following World War II bombings which destroyed most businesses along Dearborn Avenue between Woodward and Gratiot Streets NW; this destruction led to the nickname "The Great Fire Walk." However subsequent growth resumed soon afterward with reactivation among various entrepreneurs including Donny & Marie O'Neill who reopened their original storefront at 504 Main Street NW after having closure during war time due to lackadaisical operation - their daughter Lisa currently operates that establishment.) In 1949, Italian-American Luigi Einaudi opened his own coffee shop on Second Street. In 1984, Donny Deutschman started a small roastery located in the old post office building on Third Street. The following year, he moved the roastery to its current location on First Avenue. In 1997, Starbucks began operations in Ferndale and soon became the town's primary source of artisan coffee.

Ferndale has a rich history dating back to 1849, when it was founded as a small frontier village by nearby East Lansing citizens. In 1916, Ferndale became an incorporated city and has since grown into one of the most vibrant and culturally diverse communities in central Michigan. The earliest settlers in Ferndale were farmers who arrived from eastern Canada around 1849. They built log homes on what is now Main Street. By 1860, the population had increased to about 100 people and some families began to purchase land for speculation. It wasn't until after World War II that Ferndale's fortunes improved significantly with new waves of immigrants settling here from Hungary, Poland and other parts of Europe during the post-war period. Ferndale was founded in 1849 by farmers and businessmen as a village on the east side of the Mackinac River. In 1871, Ferndale became a city and attained its current size. The Village of Ferndale was disbanded in 1922 when it merged with the City of Mackinaw City.
