Ferndale, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 26,883 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Detroit River between downtown Detroit and Midtown Detroit, about 15 miles (24 km) east of downtown Lansing and 25 miles (40 km) north of Grand Rapids. Ferndale is one of two cities in Washtenaw County that are both incorporated as municipalities within their respective counties. The first settlement in what is now Ferndale was made by fur traders in 1812 as part of a effort to find a route to the Pacific Ocean from Asia through the Great Lakes area. A post office called "Ferndale" was established in 1815, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1836. The first permanent settler arrived in 1830, when John Potter built a cabin on land he had purchased from James Kinsman for $2 per acre ($ 28 000 today). In 1840, George Washington Herrington built a log cabin near present-day Pioneer Park on land he had bought from John Jepson for $4 per acre ($ 84 000 today). In 1847, Nicholas Rogers founded the Village of Rogersville downstream from present-day Ferndale on an tract granted him by Governor William Monell during Indian War #3.Rogersville became an initial town charter under Act No 1497 passed by the Michigan legislature on July 2, 1847; it had no legal existence until June 30th following passage of Act No 3 which repealed all township charters created before July 2nd inclusive except ferndale village charter #1 which continued into effect until January 1st 1889 when it merged with Adams Township due to population growth thereabouts.).
