The Coast Guard has been in operation in Michigan since 1892. The first coast guard station was built at Fenton on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In 1916, the Coast Guard station at Grand Rapids was closed and the facilities were relocated to Fenton. The present day Coast Guard Station at Fenton is one of the oldest operational coast guard stations in the United States. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has made a significant impact on public safety in Michigan. The service provides emergency services such as search and rescue, maritime security and traffic control; it also maintains an important role in helping protect our coastline and waterways from major incidents including storms and piracy. Fenton is a small city in the southeastern corner of Michigan, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Md.-Washtenaw County metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Fenton was Nicholas Sauer in 1824. A post office called Fenton was established in 1828, and remained in operation until it been discontinued in 1901. Fenton became a village on November 2, 1951, when it merged with neighboring town of Southfield to form a new city. The merger resulted from voter approval of an ordinance creating a "city-county" structure for the two towns. At its creation, Fenton had a population of 3,381. According to the 2000 US Census there were 6,521 people living in Fenton when it consolidated with Southfield; however this number increased to 8,471 by 2007 when all but 1 ZIP code (73401) within southfield's boundaries became part of Fenton through annexation or incorporation without voting populace participation: 8,611 residents (99%) lived within incorporated limits as opposed to annexed limits which only numbered 714 residents out of a total community population of 10K+ (the entire unincorporated area lying north and east side streets west off I-94 & east side streets south off I-94). This increase reflects growth pattern seen throughout northwest Michigan as more and more suburbanites move into areas near major cities like Detroit or Flint while rural families leave for similar economic opportunities closer toIMHAs such as Holland MI & Escanaba MI among others... The sculpture is now located at Point Loma National Seashore in San Diego County, California. Fenton is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded by James Fenton in 1836 and named for him. The first settlers in what would become Fenton were farmers who arrived between 1793 and 1800. They built their homes around a small pond on the east side of town, which they called "Fentons Ford". By 1830, there were about 20 families living in Fenton. In 1836, James Fenton purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land near the present-day intersection of Front Avenue and State Road 896 to establish his new town. He named it after himself and laid out streets and blocks according to his own plan. Because many people had heard about his new town from others in the area, construction began quickly on what would eventually be known as downtown Fenton. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living in downtown Fenton proper; this number increased to 300 by 1845. In 1850, when Michigan became a state, Fenton became part of Washtenaw County under the jurisdiction of Wayne County - something that local officials continued to strive for until 1898 when Washtenaw County was merged into Wayne County proper; however, municipal services still continued through core institutions such as fire department and public schools until 1959 when all school functions were centralized within Wayne Community School District #1 which included both rural Dearborn Township (excepting smaller villages such as Auburn Hills) outside Detroit limits while all other municipalities within Detroit limitseffectively ceased to exist save for an enclave of rural Village Of Paradise located inside City Limits Some key events during early history include: James Davenport – Born December 12th 1865 1890 – First post office established with mail service coming from Lansing 1892 – James Davenport is elected Lieutenant Governor 1898 – Announces plans for merger with Wayne County including setting up county courthouse on Woodward Avenue 1901 – First streetcars run atop Woodward Avenue between Main Street & Oak Park Boulevard
