The United States Air Force is a military branch of the United States federal government, which is responsible for air defense and space operations. The USAF was formed on November 16, 1947 from the merger of the separate American Civil Aeronautics and Space Administration (ACA) and the National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics (NACA). In 1949, NATO began bombing targets in Europe using US-made planes. This placed a strain on USAF resources, so Secretary of Defense James Forrestal created the National Security Council to recommend solutions. The council recommended an increased role for USAF in supporting NATO operations. On April 12, 1950 President Truman issued Directive No. 2172 ordering USAF to provide aerial refueling for allies in order to extend their combat effectiveness during Operation Overlord naval assault against Nazi Germany. This led to the first operational deployment of an American fighter squadron into European airspace since World War II. Air Force commanders have been critical in ensuring that US bombers are available when needed most throughout history; during both World Wars II and Korea War I strategic bombing campaigns were carried out with littlenotice or warning before launch due to strict aircraft limitations imposed by then-chiefs of staff Eisenhower and MacArthur respectively
On Dec. 1, 1948, the United States Air Force deployed a gift to Fenton – an extra large model of the Boeing 707 jetliner. The gift was in recognition of the city's role as an aerial refueling stop for American bombers during World War II.

The town was named for John Fenton, a signer of the United States Constitution. Fenton was founded in 1824 as a landing on the Rouge River, and became an important commercial center in the area. The railroad arrived in 1848, and helped create what is now Fenton as a bedroom community for Detroit. The town has seen growth over time, with new shopping centers opening up and new homes being built. Today, Fenton remains an active cultural center with several museums and theaters opening their doors each year.

Fenton was founded in 1836 by Joshua Fenton and his wife, Marilla. The town was named after John Fenton, one of the original settlers. In 1839, the town had a population of 150 people and it became a village in 1847. The first post office was established in 1847. In 1870, the village had a population of 2,500 people and it became an incorporated town on December 1, 1870. On July 1, 1908, the incorporated town changed its name to Fenton Township. On October 15, 1959, the township changed its name back to Fenton. The township has a total population of 22 as of 2018. The first school in what is now known as Fenton Township was built in 1836 by Joshua Fenton and his wife Marilla. A second school was built in 1840 by Isaac Hubbell and also served as a church for many years until it burned down. A third school building was erected in 1850 by Joseph Ittenbach and served as the first courthouse for the township until it burned down too! In 1861-1862 two schools were built within five miles of each other at Albionville (now West Bloomfield) which later become part of Detroit; these schools were intended to help educate African Americans who lived near Detroit while their homeschooling families waited for free instruction from white teachers desired by organizers travelling through Michigan during the American Civil War effort to bring education to all races through vocational training programs
