The history of the navy inEscanaba goes back to 1841 when Commodore James Fenton opened up his trading post at present day Gratiot Avenue and Third Street near downtown Escanaba (now known as Midtown). Commodore Fenton was followed by Commodore John Pugh who opened up another post at Fourth street east of downtown just north of Gratiot Avenue on July 5, 1845 (the date also marks exactly one year after Detroit’s incorporation as a town). At this time there were only 3 navies stationed proximate to Michigan: USS Constitution (1837), USS Gadsden(1838), USS Perry(1840) It should be noted that defense against Indian attacks was then considered quite important so General Harrison ordered Commodore Fenton not to arm his ships but instead rely on trade goods brought overland from Canada enroute to Flint for Army supplies. On October 1st, 1851, Captain George Demarest took command of USS Constitution during her first deployment off the coast of Mexico City under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter Jr.. Escanaba is a small town in the east side of Michigan, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Benzie County and has a total area of 38 square miles (100 km²). Escanaba, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Port Huron County area of Michigan. It was founded in 1836 by John Jacob Astor and his wife Catharine Marshall Astor. The original name of the town was 'Escanaba'. In 1851, it became part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1965, Escanaba became a city and has since grown to become one of the most populous cities in Michigan. The city is home to several museums including The Grosse Pointe Museum of Art, The Detroit Institute of Arts, and The University of Michigan Law School. It is adjacent to Muskegon Heights and East Lansing on the east side of Muskegon Lake and to Washtenaw Heights on the west side of Muskegon River. The first settler in what is now Escanaba was John Coleman in 1810. He built a cabin near present-day Park Street and White Road. In 1821, Robert Stephenson built a steamboat dockage depot at what's now called Stephenson Terminal on Michilimackinac Creek just upstream from today's downtown core (the current site of East Lansing). This was one of the few places where steamboats could dock for repairs or supplies before being refloated back upriver for transport downriver to other points such as Detroit or Chicago. A post office called "Escanaba" was established in 1827, but no town developed until 1830 when Samuel Morse erected an adobe building known as Morse House on land now east of Main Street between First and Second Streets. The first store opened here in 1830 under Mr. Morse's name with Jno Mason taking possession later that year also becoming the first white person to own land within what is now Escanaba Township .
