The National Guard in Escanaba began its history in 1909. At that time, the Michigan National Guard consisted of two companies, both at the local armory. When World War I began, the state militia was called into service and the Armory became a national guard training camp. In 1917, Congress passed the National Defense Act which created a standing army in America and made the National Guard an integral part of this new force. The Army replaced the Navy as America’s primary military protectorate during World War II and so it was only natural for the National Guard to become involved in this conflict as well. During World War II there were more than 1 million soldiers and airmen serving with our military forces overseas. More than 2,000 Guardsmen lost their lives in action; many of these men were volunteers from Escanaba. Since 1946, when Escanaba became a city within Michigan’s borders, its citizens have proudly contributed their time to our military by wearing uniforms and displaying patriotism through patriotic activities like parades and Fourth of July events. Our community has come to know how important it is to show support for our country by honoring those who have served us before us – current and past members of our military are always remembered with appreciation here at home!

Escanaba, Michigan is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 17,653 at the 2010 census. As of 2007, Escanaba is the largest city in and the county seat of Washtenaw County, Michigan. It is part of the Detroit−Warren Metropolitan Statistical Area and is also included in the larger Ann Arbor−Washtenaw County Combined Statistical Area. The first European settlers to what would become Escanaba were French fur traders who traveled through what is now eastern Washtenaw County in 1803-04 looking for a route to China via Lake Huron. They named their new settlement after one of their own: Escanaba (Arabic شَقَانَة "EqÄnabah"), meaning "ucknow" or "snowy place." In 1807, General Lewis Cass appointed John Sibley as head surveyor for Wayne County and began work on his famous Great Lakes Survey which culminated in 1809 with his report recommending that Chicago be founded as the capital of Illinois Territory; however, this recommendation was not followed through until much later due to political disagreements between Washington D.C., which had then become an enlarged territory under President James K. Polk, and Philadelphia, D.C., where George Washington had been born over two centuries earlier and where most congressional decisions were made before 1800). In 1830-31 it was decided that Escanaba should be elevated to a town so that it could compete with neighboring Ann Arbor as an educational center for Black Americans coming out of slavery during America's early Civil War years; by 1835 all towns except Ann Arbor had been elevated to cities but Escanaba remained Town status until 1959 when it became City Status again following its reestablishment as a city within Washtenaw County pursuant to Act No 734 of 1959 (the Watershed Restoration Plan). The first post office was established in 1839, and by 1845, Escanaba had a population of about 150 people. The town quickly grew into a busy trading center with goods coming in from all over the United States. In 1847,Escanaba was designated as the capital of Michigan and began to grow even more rapidly. By 1850, there were 1,500 people living in Escanaba and it had become an important economic center. During this time, Escanaba also developed into one of the most cultural centers in Michigan because it housed several prominent writers and musicians. In 1880, however, things started to change forEscanaba when local businessmen decided to build a railroad through their town. This created many problems for the community as it led to increased traffic and pollution which caused some businesses to close down or move out of town. Municipal government completely collapsed following this event and no new steps were taken until 1912 when voters approved passage of a charter giving city government back withinEscanaba limits beginning on January 1st that year
The Escanaba, Michigan area was first populated in the 18th century. The town of Escanaba was founded by a group of Michigan Indians in 1796. The town grew rapidly, and by 1800 it had a population of over 1000 people. In 1814, the United States acquired land east of the lower Peninsula from Great Britain, and as part of this deal, Escanaba became part of the new state of Michigan. In 1825, the town voted to become an incorporated city. By 1830,Escanaba had a population of over 3000 people. The Panic of 1837 caused an economic slump in the region, and by 1840 only about 800 people remained in Escanaba. However, because of its location on Lake Superior and its close relationship with Detroit – which at that time accounted for almost half all Michigan’s exports –Escanaba continued to grow rapidly throughout the 1840s and 1850s.
