The Escanaba Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by Nicholas and Emma Brealey. The company first made coffee in a small kitchen located on the original site of the current Old Market building. In 1898, they moved their business to the larger Pemberton Building and continued making coffee until 1928. In 1944, Mr. Brealey sold his share of the company to Harry Jaffe who kept it running until his death in 1978. After Jaffe's death, his son John took over as CEO of the company. In 1984, John Jaffe's wife Dorothy passed away and he succeeded her as CEO. The company has since been run by three generations of Jafes: John (his son), Dorothy (Dorothy's daughter) and their niece Lisa Jaffe-Calabrese.
Escanaba, Michigan is an agricultural and scientific center in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The city is the seat of Escanaba County and home to the University of Michigan campus. The population was 61,811 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to come to what is now Escanaba were fur traders from Siberia in 1812-1813. They named the bay "Escanaban" after a small village on the river where they landed. A French trading post was built here in 1819 by Jean Baptiste Chouteau, who named it "Nulle-Châtel". The first post office in what is now Escanaba was called Espanola (now part of Ann Arbor). In 1821, John Doane founded a grist mill here. By 1824, there were five villages in central and eastern Wayne County: Anglia (now part of Detroit), Beaver Dam (now part of Flint), Centralia (now part of Birmingham), Claremore (now Muskegon Heights) and Espanola. In 1827, US President James Kossuth issued a proclamation calling for Territorial expansion into present-day Michigan territory east of Lake Huron as part of Treaty No 1 between United States and Great Britain over boundary issues on that side of the lake. As a result, all but two villages along this stretch - Clifton Park & Alma - became incorporated as towns within Wayne County when it was organized January 1st, 1830 under charter granted by George Washington as Partitioned Territory OfMichigan On July 7th 1840 Camp Perry arrived at Marquette Harbor with 101 men led by Lt Colonel David Rice with orders to explore western Canada and determine its location for an American colony or military installation should war break out between Great Britain and America over control of North America. On their return trip across Lake Superior they discovered newly laid down map entitled "Expedition Report on Canadian Lands Administered by Her Majesty's Government" which showed area northward from Mackinac River including present day Escanaba Township lying within boundaries designated for Anoka Co., Minnesota Territory established February 15th 1792 under treaty negotiated with Frenchmen Jacques Marquette & Pierre Le Moyne et al.. This discovery dispatched troops commanded by General Anthony Wayne from Detroit via Marquette Harbor back upriver to Fort Dearborn where supplies could be obtained before moving on northwestward towards Hudson’s Bay Company posts at Georgian Bay ..... One hundred days after arriving General Wayne realized that his forces had not moved beyond coverable land west of Mackinac Island so he ordered them back upstream again marching through Peretz Township southbound past Greenfield Cemetery thence marched one thousand miles reducing original target area from 2 million acres to approximately 350 square miles..... completed Campaign against British Forces occupying Canada ended May 11th 1745.. Aftermath resulted in large tracts being awarded/granted adjacent UPPER PENINSULA TO THE UNITED STATES BY CONVENTION OF PRESIDENT JAMES KOSSUTH....... From this time until 1800 no land grants were made east or south bank OF LAKEShore except for some small parcels near Chicago River.............. Today's portion extending northerly off shore includes communities such as Traverse City,, Grand Rapids,, Port Huron,, etc......................... The town of Escanaba, Michigan was founded in 1879 by John P. Chilton and his wife, Elizabeth. The town was named for the Escanaba River which ran through it. In 1902, the town had a population of 746 residents. It declined in population until 1910 when it reached 1,247 residents. In 1916, the townsite was lost to developers and the community became known as East Lansing. It only regained its former popularity after the opening of Mackinac Island in 1927 which brought new people and businesses to Escanaba. The growth of Escanaba led to an increase in property values which allowed for more development and expansion of the townsite into what is now known as downtownEscanaba. The influx of new people and businesses helped to revive escanaba’s economy and continue to grow over time
