The Escanaba Army Ammunition Plant was one of the largest and most important military ammunition plants in the United States. It operated from 1892 until it closed in 1970. The plant produced over 1 million rounds of ammunition a day, making it one of the most important munitions plants in America. The army Ammunition Plant was founded in 1892 by Captain George W. Smith and his team at the Detroit Arsenal on Mackinac Island. The new plant was designed to produce munitions for the Michigan Militia and other state militias. It soon became known as one of America’s leading military ammunition plants. In 1949, the navy took over ownership of the Escanaba plant when they purchased land on which it sat. With this new ownership, responsibility for production shifted from the army Ammunition Plant to Naval Munitions Command (NMC). The naval munitions command was responsible for producing torpedoes, mines, rockets, and other Naval Weapons System items including aircraft carriers and submarines.

Escanaba is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Escanaba County. The population was 37,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Flint metropolitan area. The first European tosight what is now Escanaba was fur trader George Vancouver on August 24, 1795 while exploring the lower Peninsula region for British Columbia Fur Company partners John McLoughlin and James Cook. He named it "Escanabia" after his place of birth in Scotland, Edinburghshire (now Aberdeenshire). In 1824, Edward Payson established a mill here and named it Eustis Mill after himself and General Thomas Eustis who had been commandant at Fort Mackinac on Lake Huron since 1815; this gave rise to an erroneous idea that Eustis was also related to General Thomas Tompkins (1792-1860) who commanded American forces during the War of 1812. A post office called "Escanaba" was established in 1829, but no impact appears to have occurred until 1840 when John Fenton opened a store there with Jno Fenton grain merchants brother Andrew Fenton as owner/manager; this store continued until about 1865 when it closed due to competition from new stores opening near by such as Wm Higginson's general mercantile house which became one of downtown's earliest businesses. By 1860, all but one business had closed or moved out so that only four remained: Lumber Yard (now First National Bank), blacksmith shop operated by Elias Howe & Son with associates Isaac Howe & Alfred Howe soon followed; harness shop operated by Geo Aiken & Sons with GEO Aiken being its first president; Harness Maker erected on lot northeast of present day Second United Methodist Church where it still stands today - building not included in extant shopping district now known as First Union Center occupied by several high-end shops including Macy’s department store which purchased property adjacent in 1966 In 1862 local farmer George Stephenson founded what became Stephenson Brothers Grain Elevator on south side of present day bank across street from current site where he storedgrain for shipment upriver later becoming Escanaba's first elevator If you go down State Street just past Flourish Hardware you will see a large barn used as storage for their Elevator before turning east onto State Street again You can go North along State Street past Igloo Dairy until you reach old High School then turn left and continue going east until you reach Present Day Second United Methodist Church
The first white people to come to Escanaba were French fur traders in the late 17th century. The area was originally part of the Huron Confederation, but became a part of Michigan in 1815. The town was founded on the east side of the river by Frenchmen, and began to grow quickly after it was designated as a city in 1833. In 1847, Escanaba became an official county seat of Allegany County. In 1888, the city annexed what is now Warren Township.
