Eastpointe is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 57,531 at the 2010 census,[1] making it the third-largest city in Oakland County and one of its thirteen cities.[2] The city is located on the eastern edge of Detroit metropolitan area and forms part of its economic core. It contains major cultural attractions such as Wayne State University, Museum District, and Eastpointe Arsenal industrial park. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Eastpointe were French traders who called it "Village de la Grange" (Farm Village). In 1812, General Anthony Wayne's army marched through present-day Eastpointe on its way from Detroit to take control of the mouth of the river that controlled trade between Detroit and Yorktown during America's War for Independence. Lieutenant Colonel John Plessis built a small fort at what is now known as Park Avenue in 1814 after his forces destroyed Fort Dearborn near modern day Auburn Hills. In 1819, Plessis sold land he had bought east of town to Henry Ford for $1 million dollars[3]. Ford began construction on his own parallel road called Dearborn Boulevard which would eventually become Woodward Avenue. Ford met with local Native Americans at a Casino near what is now Mount Pleasant Cemetery when he decided to open his new company in order to build cars more efficiently than his competitors[4][5]. On July 16, 1919, President Warren G Harding dedicated Eastern Pointe Municipal Airport which served as home base for many American military aircraft during World War I[6]. On October 5th, 1928, Eastern Pointe was incorporated as an unincorporated community by act of Michigan Legislature under name "Eastpointe".[7] In 1931, munitions manufacturer Armour purchased 3% interest in Ford Motor Company; this made Armour one percent ownerof every automaker within North America with over 100 divisions[8][9], giving him veto power over decisions made by other automakers about production quotas and prices.[10] By 1933 Armour had merged with Time Life/International News Service (just prior to nationalization) forming News Corporation which became CBS Corporation.[11] Eastern Pointe experienced rapid growth following World War II due largely to postwar demand for labor created by weapons manufacturers like Lockheed Aircraft Corp., United States Steel Corporation,[12][13]:235 wadcutters - one hundred fifty feet long - produced warships' masts off shore during World War II; these were then towed upriver using launches into Lake Erie
