Eastpointe is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 96,711 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Oakland County by population. In 1837, John Sibley bought 6 square miles (15 km2) of land north of Detroit for $4 per acre ($ [$ today]). He named his new settlement after himself and his friend General George Armstrong Custer during their military campaigns against Native Americans in 1847-1848. In 1849, James Wirtz purchased 1/2 mile (1 km) east of Sibley's original location from him for $5 per year ($ [$ today]). Wirtz renamed his new town "East Point" after himself and built a small village on the site with about 30 residents in 1850-1851. A post office called "East Point" was established at this location on October 12, 1850, but no mail ever arrived there because an Indian attack destroyed the post office building four days later. In 1861, Anthony Wayne built a three-story wooden millinery store on Woodward Avenue near Cass Corridor between Cass Corridor Road and River Rouge Boulevard—the first structure erected within what would become downtown Eastpointe. The store became known as "The Daily News". The millinery business thrived until 1886 when it closed due to competition from newly developed businesses such as Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Plant across the street and shops operated by J & H Marx Clothing Co., Sears & Roebuck et al.. In 1892–1893, Alfred Knoppers opened a dry goods store on Cedar Street between Woodward Avenue and Cass Corridor Road which became known as "Knoppers' Corner". This period witnessed significant growth for Downtown EastPointe with many new buildings being constructed including The Masonic Temple (1914), City Hall (1924), Justice Department Building (1925), State Theatre Annex (1927), Macklinore Woolen Mills Building(1928), American Legion Post No./1 Headquarters( 1930), First Baptist Church (1932) and more... This also included development along riverfront including large blocks now occupied by MLK Jr.'s Elementary School & Parkview Mall followed by large lots currently used for Storage Yards etc... Many fine examples still stand today like Masonic Temple (& its replica building next door) & First Baptist Church (& its replica building next door)... These buildings were all designed or built by well-known architects who lived or worked in Downtown EastPointe during this time period: Clifford Thornton Architectural Firm; Clarence Ladd Architects; Albert Kahn Associates; Edward Thorpe Architectural Firm... Today Downtown EastPointe has evolved into an incredibly lively commercial district complete with several large retailers - most notably The Landmark Center - anchoring much of its retail shopping environment......
