The gift was from General James F. Byrnes, the Commander in Chief of American forces in Europe and an important figure in the war effort.
Eastpointe is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Eastpointe were George and Sarah Hough who arrived in 1837 from Ohio. They founded a log cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River. In 1840, they moved to what is now east of Main Street and built another cabin on an island in the river. In 1847, they erected a frame house on their current site. In 1870, they sold their land to John Pritchard for $2,500 cash plus $1 per acre (valued at ). Pritchard laid out streets and named them after family members including his father-in-law John Grosse (Pritchard's uncle), brother-in-law Amos Morse (Morse's nephew), sister-in-law Martha Kapp (Kapp's niece), mother-in-law Rachel Beech (Beech's daughter), and wife Martha Washington Keyes Pritchard. In 1872, Eastpointe had two churches: First Parish Congregational Church and Second Presbyterian Church which served as schoolhouses until1891 when West Point Elementary School opened across Main Street from First Presbyterian Church. The first post office in Eastpointe was established in 1892 with Wm Epps as its first trustee The main thoroughfare through town was State Road 2 which led to Lansing via Ionia Township until 1937 when it became US Highway 12 Alternate which connected Detroit with Lansing via Ionia Township In 1925, an ice cream plant was built by Clarence "Tootsie" Schieffer at 9 Depot Avenue near present day 15th Street Southeast In 1950s/1960s there were many factories along Main Street including Wernham Rubber Company that closed down or relocated to other towns within Michigan or abroad In 1969/1970 there was a major fire at the State Fairgrounds that destroyed most of downtown East pointe According to the2010 U.S. Census report,[1] 8% of households lived below poverty line[2] while 44% of residents identified themselves as white.[3] There are also many African American descent residents living throughout township due to its significant slave trade history dating back over 200 years prior[4]. Many people from Africatown are still active business owners today especially around 15th street southeast where there are several restaurants popular among EastPointe natives such as Moon Pie BBQ & Pizza ($) and Soul Kitchen ($) . Another large concentration of businesses can be found along Railroad Ave., typically called "the strip". This stretch runs between15th St SE and 16th St SE between US 12 Alternate (formerly SR 2) & Ionia Rd., home to numerous small businesses catering mostly towards African Americans operating primarily selling groceries such as Fresh Market Supermarket (), Jewelry store (), video rentals (), used clothing stores (), etc.. It has become known locally for its high crime rate particularly since several high value apartments have been constructed nearby increasing demand for criminal activity being conducted out side these establishments

Eastpointe is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the east side of the Lower Peninsula of Michigans Upper Peninsula. The population was 21,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is known for its manufacturing industry and heavy reliance on high-tech companies such as Intel and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Eastpointe also has a sizable agricultural sector, with produce being sold throughout the city and outside of it. The first settlements in what is now Eastpointe were made by fur traders in 1795-1800 who named their settlement after English town Easthampton in Hampshire, England. In 1824, John Drennan established a sawmill on the Little River near present day Clinton Street in what became known as Drennan's Landing. By 1830, there were 10 mills in operation in Eastpointe Township; seven were operated by Drennan himself and three were owned by associates including Prentiss brothers Abel (1801-1865) and Isaac (1796-1868). In 1835, James Watt developed a water wheel that would power an electric system for lighting his mills which began production around that year. In 1840, Frank Lloyd Wright designed and built his first home at 216 Wabash Avenue NW which became one of Wright's most famous landmarks. Wright originally proposed using this house as his presidential White House but plans to build it fell through because President James Kinsley refused to allow building on Kinsleys estate within earshot of Washington Monument.(Wright was later offered use as office space adjacent to then US Capitol Building.) Eastpointe township was organized into two wards; North Ward went to David Brooks while South Ward got Daniel Webster(1837-1912). In 1875, Oakland Mills opened up operations nearby providing access to cheap labor for other Detroit mills during a time when skilled workers wanted nothing to do with unskilled work.(See: "Oakland Mills - A History" & "Detroit Manufacturing - The history".) In 1899 Arthur Ashe won Wimbledon tennis singles Championships against some very good players from around Europe at Crystal Palace Stadium but when he came back east to play again only one week later East Pointe had gotten word about his visit so they set up camp across from where he played right next door! All night long people could be seen coming out from behind those trees trying to get a glimpse or just watch him play! This showmanship continue until he finally won another title years later at Wembley stadium! On July 2nd 1937 United States Steel Corporationleased land bounded by Mack Road (to the south), Huron Boulevard (to the north), Pierce Street (west), Armoury Road (east), thence northeast along Armoury Road past Grosse Pointes Lake towards Saginaw Bay (.7 mile) leased from Forest City National Bank . On November 3rd 1938 Stromberg Aircraft Corporation authorized construction of an airport consisting mainly of four runways measuring 1,500' x 75', asphalt surfaces with ILS procedures capable of handling large aircraft like bombers without causing undue takeoff or landing delays for citizens living within range

As of the 2010 census, its population was 487, making it the second most populous city in Oakland County after Detroit. Eastpointe is also home to East Pointe High School, which serves as one of the largest high school districts in Michigan. The city's nickname is "The City on the Bay." Eastpointe was founded by Holland Shoe Company founder John Jacob Astor in 1872 as a small trading post on what is now Harbor Drive east of present-day downtown Eastpointe. In 1875, Astor donated land for a public library and park that would house both his shoe company and his new town hall building. The first store opened at 9 E Harrison St., across from today's State Capitol Complex (now Michigan State University). In 1895, when Lansing Municipal Reform Act granted city status to Eastpointe, Mayor George Brandt proposed creating an eastern side street parallel to Cass Avenue known as "Boulevard John F Kennedy Boulevard" in honor of then-U.S. President John F Kennedy (1961-1963). The idea languished until 1913 when then-Mayor Alvan Bockelman championed it with much success; boulevard became reality that year when Alderman Leland Morse approved plans for two blockslong streetscapes extending east from Cass Avenue into the heart of what is now downtown Eastpointe - becoming one continuous urban neighborhood with new businesses and residences popping up along its length like mushrooms following some unknown cue.
