Navy gift history in East Lansing, Michigan begins with the USS Constitution. This ship was launched on December 12, 1784 and served as the flagship of the United States Navy from 1794 to 1814. The USS Constitution was also the first American warship to be equipped with a rudder. On November 1, 1821, President James K. Polk signed an act creating the U.S. Naval Academy and awarded it toEast Lansing residents George Washington Carver and Amos Kendall for their help in developing agriculture in that area. The academy has been accredited by the Middle Eastern School Consortium and continues to offer scholarships and training programs today.
East Lansing, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 17,798 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Livingston County and the second largest city outside of Detroit after Detroit. East Lansing is also home to Eastman Business School and Eastern Michigan University. The area that now constitutes East Lansing was first settled by Native Americans in the region that includes today's Lansing Township, east of downtown Detroit on the Rouge River. In 1807, John Saginaw County was established from portions of Wayne and Muskegon counties, and included what are now east Lansing and west Bloomfield Township; Saginaw Bayou ran through what is now eastern Lansing. The only town founded in this county was Monee near present-day Troy, which served as its capital until 1817. In 1824, part of Oakland County was created including what are noweast Lansing and west Bloomfield Township; Monee became part of Auburn Hills soon thereafter. In 1837, Gratiot County were formed from parts of Oakland and Washtenaw Counties; east Lansing remained within Gratiot until it was annexed by Traverse City in 1898 (). The city's first name may have been "Lansingburgh" (a corruption of "Lansing", then spelled "Lencerville") erected by a group led by William Snyder for his father-in-law Jacob Van Dyke during an effort to get a better location for his business interests on Dearborn Street in downtown Toledo (now known as Broad Ripple Avenue). However, no evidence exists to support this claim beyond rumor or hearsay.; instead, it is more likely that Snyder named the city after one of his own family members – he had two sons – because they were all surnames beginning with L., like their parents'. vernacular appellations such as "Northeast" or "Southwest" originated because these areas lay on either side of Woodward Avenue when it bisectedDetroit Boulevard (now I-94). At some point between 1840 and 1850 (the earliest available records), Snyder renamed most all major thoroughfares north/south/east/west Superior Street except for Woodward Avenue; however Woodward remains formally unnamed even today (). During this time period too much progress had been made in developing downtown Toledo so Snyder decided to move his business operations—and create a nucleus around them—to what would later become east Lansing where he could continue evolving his concepts while others worked Downtown). vernacular namesakes such as Main Street or First Street date back to this time period too but ultimately reflect local preferences rather than any specific naming scheme.). By 1860s most main streets had been renamed excellently reflecting prevailing English naming practices (); continued growth along Woodward Avenue prompted Snyder to once again rename most streets northward--this time starting with W followed by Aveseter Streets () until finally terminating atRNAve Court (). From here southward homes went upriver along Van Dyke Road (), continuing naming tradition until eventually ending at Clinton Road().
