The business became known as the Dutch Coffee House and continued to serve refreshments until it closed in 1892. In 1895, a German immigrant began serving coffee at the Hoffman's grocery store on Huron Street. By 1907, there were three coffee shops operating in East Lansing: one operated by the Van Vleck family (owners of the Hoffmans grocery store), one by John Wiegand (owner of the Wiegand Bros. hardware store), and one by Harry Pappus (owner of the Pappus Cafe). In 1912, two more coffee shops opened: One operating under the name of "Café Bohemia" and another called "Café Orient". By 1915, there were six cafes operating in East Lansing.
East Lansing, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Lapeer County. The population was 51,827 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Lapeer County by population and it is also the largest city in East Lansing Township. The area now known as East Lansing was first settled by Pequot Indians in 1795 and was part of Grand Rapids Township until 1837 when it became its own township. The current municipality was formed on February 14, 1898, from parts of Lapeer County and East Lansing Township. The original name for the town was "Lansing." On November 3, 1901, a fire destroyed most of downtown Lansing but did not damage any homes or businesses; this event is generally considered to bethe beginning of the development of what would become East Lansing as a major commercial center. In 1907, Lansing voters passed an ordinance establishing public parks within Downtown boundaries; these Parks are still present today and serve as important community hubs today. In 1915, Detroit's Red Wings moved to their new home with Essenhaus Stadium built adjacent to Highways 4&5 which made east side streets such as State Street (now Monroe) and Washtenaw Avenue useless for traffic because they were located too close to both stadiums! After numerous complaints from motorists who had to cross washtenaw avenue during games at Red Wings stadium, local officials decided to build a median separating vehicles from pedestrians on each side of road – this traffic calming measure still exists today). These days you can find many restaurants near state street between Highways 4&5 if you're looking for Indian food or Chinese takeout- however there are no stores open late anymore due to Motor City's economic decline following World War II when demand for aluminum turned out lower than expected. Starting in 1957 Eastern Michigan University began construction on what would become one of its most iconic landmarks: The Student Union Building (now called EMU Place). This building served as both a student center and administrative offices until 1978 when it was demolished due to seismic concerns after being severely damaged by two large earthquakes that yearcliffe across eastern Michigan combined!
