There has been coffee drinking in East Lansing, Michigan for over 150 years. The first coffee house in the city was opened in 1892 by Dr. John Klopfer and his wife, Anna. The Klopfer Coffee House was a popular stop for students on their way to and from class. In 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Burch started the first grocery store in East Lansing with a small roasting shop inside it. They sold coffee beans and espresso drinks from their store until 1971 when they closed the business down due to financial difficulties. The first Starbucks opened up inEast Lansing in 1997 as part of the University of Michigan’s expansion into downtown Detroit Campus areas. However, Starbucks did not keep East Lansing’s pre-existing coffee culture alive long enough to make an impact on the community – they only operated for two years before closing down again due to low customer volume and high operating costs associated withopenings like this near metropolitan areas with much more established coffee cultures (See: “Starbucks comeback story - Part 2: Why did they fail?”). In early 2018, there were rumors that Gourmet Coffee had plans to open up a new location within walking distance of East Lansing University campus – however no confirmation could be found at that time which led many people to believe that this rumor might be false or even fake news. After months of speculation, it was finally confirmed by Gourmet Coffee CEO Jonathan Spinelli that Gourmet Coffee will indeed open a new location within walking distance of East Lansing University campus – however no official opening date or details have yet been released! This is definitely another step forward for Gourmet Coffee as they continue trying to revive old favorite locations across America such as these!

There are many coffeeOrigin stories in East Lansing, Michigan. One of the earliest coffeehouses in town was The Gourmand, opened in 1824 by John S. Goodrich and his brother-in-law, Daniel Webster. The Goodrich brothers were initially only selling coffee beans but soon developed a reputation for their quality grinding and brewing products. In 1851, The Gourmand was joined by anotherEast Lansing establishment, The Hermitage Tavern. Both businesses were popular with students and locals alike for their delicious coffee and comfortable atmosphere. In 1862, Adam & Charles Black opened the first grocery store in East Lansing and began to sell coffee beans as well as other groceries. By 1865, Adam & Charles Black had become the second largest importer of coffee in the United States after J. P. Morgan’s National Coffee Company. In 1897, Java Coffee House became one of the first places in Michigan to serve hot chocolate on premises while still remaining open to customers who came into the store for lunch or dinner. It is also noted that Java was one of the few places where people could buy cigarettes beginning in 1899! In 1953, Homer Hixon established himself as one of Michigan’s most renowned roasters with his first business venture called “Hixon’s Coffee Roasters” located on Woodward Avenue in downtown East Lansing. Today Hixon Coffee continues to be a favorite stop among local residents and tourists alike for its high quality espresso drinks and fresh produce from their garden courtyard!
East Lansing, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ingham County. The population was 22,521 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Ingham County. It is also a part of the Lansing–Warren–Dearborn Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as East Lansing was first settled by Native American peoples in the 17th century. By 1800, East Lansing had become a farming community with two stores and 10 families living on Indian Trail between Canadian Road and Washtenaw Bayou. In 1824, John Wilkinson founded what would become East Lansing Township on land he had purchased from the Ottawa Indians near present-day West Bloomfield Township. Wilkinson renamed his township after himself because he wanted to promote eastern education within his community. In 1826, Detroit merchant George Armstrong donated land east of present-day Michigan State University for a public school system that would be known as Fordland School District No. 1 (later Shiawassee School District). This donation helped create what is now East Lansing Township along with Dearborn Heights and Gratiot Heights which followed in 1827 and 1830 respectively. By 1840, there were three churches in town: One Congregational (founded 1672), one Presbyterian (founded 1712), and one Methodist (founded 1814). A post office was established at East Lansing in 1850; it remained open until 1974 when it became part of Grand Rapids through an amalgamation of several small towns in Kalamazoo County that year into Grand Rapids-based Wayne County

East Lansing is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Lansing County. The population was 25,569 at the 2010 census. East Lansing is bordered by Grand Rapids to the east, Mlive to the north, Hillsdale to the west, and Clinton Township to the south. The first European settlers in what is now East Lansing were German Lutherans who arrived in 1786 from Hesse-Kassel, Germany. They founded a small town named "Lansing" on land that they claimed as part of their homeland after escaping religious persecution there during the Protestant Reformation. After a few years, some of these pioneers moved away and founded other townships in eastern Michigan: Clinton Township (1802), Hillsdale Township (1812), and Gratiot Township (1814). In 1824, John Sibley became the first white man to live in what is now East Lansing when he settled near what is today's Market Street and State Avenue. Sibley started an agricultural business here and also built a school house which still stands today on Court Street in downtown East Lansing. After Sibley's death in 1828, his wife Laura started teaching school here until her death in 1842; then it was taught by men for several more decades before becoming an all-female educational institution called Eastern Female Seminary (EMF) in 1907. EMF merged with Loretto College (now Eastern Michigan University) on October 1st 1957 to form one large university campus across three campuses: EMU/Loretto Campus - located on Dearborn Road between Brush Road and Woodward Avenue; Southeast Campus - located at 10 Mile Rd./Masonic Temple Drive; and North Campus - located at Huron River Parkway/Clinton Boulevard). During World War II, many residents served within various branches of our military including Army Air Forces General Headquarters' Aircraft Replacement Training Center(ARTC), Southern Attack Wing(NAWG), United States Marine Corps Weapons Laboratory(USML), Navy yards at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard(NPSY)and Georgetown Naval Yard(GNVA). Many current or former residents have gone on to make significant contributions both inside and outside of our community including CEOs such as Carl Icahn[1], Tony Travolta[2], Lloyd Blankfein[3] & Eliot Spitzer[4]. The town of East Lansing was founded by the Miwok Indians in 1824 and was part of St. Clair Township until it became a separate town in 1868.
