East Lansing, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Livingston County. The population was 55,857 at the 2010 census. East Lansing is also home to Eastern Michigan University, one of the largest universities in the United States and one of its six regional campuses. East Lansing was founded on December 3, 1824 as a result of land purchases from the government by developer John Sibley and his wife Catharine Beecher Sibley. In 1831, a new courthouse and jail were built on State Street in what is now East Lansing proper. The town grew rapidly due to its location near Northwestern State Teachers College (now Eastern Michigan University) and other businesses and industries that sprung up around it. By 1881, East Lansing had become an official city with charter No. 329-A. In 1907, local manufacturer James Fenton set up shop in what is now downtown East Lansing along US-21/I-75WSU; this became known as "The Fenton Place." Fenton's business thrived until World War II when he went out of business due to rationing of materials during World War II. However, Dormire & Woodward Properties LLC, which purchased Fenton's assets in 1969,[2] continues to operate as an agricultural dealership across I-75 from downtown east to west forties Okemos Road Ext., offering farm products including hay, eggs and cheese;[3] it has been called "the last functioning retail grocery store in downtown East Lansing".[4][5] As of 2019[update], it offers items such as organic produce,[6] meat products,[7][8][9] breads,[10][11][12] candy bars,[13],[14]] groceries plus gas services.[15][16] It remains open every day except Tuesdays since 2009 when it closed because of economic conditions caused by low commodity prices following enactment of Act 489 Publius 07-1 (The Taxpayer Protection Act).[17][18] In 1976–77 [19], residents voted not to annex neighboring Orion Township into their city limits despite pleas from Mayor Wirtz who said that doing so would increase taxes for both areas by $750 per year ($27 million today).[20]:p222 On July 1st 1977 via resolution authored by then Alderman Harry Smith Jr., all wards within the former City Limits were annexed intoEastLansing without any input from citizens or elected officials save for Mayor Wirtz himself who championed annexation at first handouts from state coffers while running atop corruption allegations against predecessor Alderman Everett Dirksen

East Lansing, Michigan is a city in the US state of Michigan. The population was 48,715 at the 2010 census. East Lansing is bounded by the Washtenaw County line to the north, Livonia to the east, Livingston County to the south and southeast, and Monroe Township to the west. It forms part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now East Lansing was John Snyder who arrived in 1796. He built a log cabin on land he purchased from the Muskegon family. In 1814, Snyder donated his land for a United States military post known as Fort Dearborn which served as headquarters for American forces during Indian Wars and World War I. The city declared itself an independent municipality on December 1,1868 after voters approved a resolution asking for separation from Oakland Township due to its close proximity to Detroit and other northwestern settlements. In 1896, Eastern School District No. 2 (later renamed East Lansing Community Schools) was organized with two schools; Central High School and North Central High School. In 1912–1913, architecturally significant additions were made to both Central High School and North Central High School; these were known as Collegiate Gothic style renovations or "Second Empire" architecture because they followed designs by Ebenezer Howard of Detroit while Grand Rapids-based architects designed most of Michigan's First Empire homes at that time. On July 16, 1914 Eastern Municipal Airport opened when it was leased from Wayne County by East Lansing City Councilmember George Wickersham Sr.. This airport would later become home to Metro Airport serving metro Detroit until its closure in 2007 by then- Mayor Dave Bing seeking $3 million in federal funds for needed upgrades including new runways and better signage which never happened although plans did surface for reopening under current Mayor Tim Walz over time In 1916–1917 Eastern became one of three municipalities within Wayne County that adopted Prohibition laws following passage of The Eighteenth Amendmentto the US Constitution legalizing liquor sales throughout all US states including Michigan On November 4th 1920 President Warren G Harding ordered Federal troops into West Side streets in response to riots taking place between workers protesting low paychecks at local breweries plus soldiers acting as law enforcement officers enforcing prohibition laws Prior to this event there had been sporadic violence but no widespread rioting taking place across entire town lines despite similar protests being staged yearly across town lines nationwide since 1835 during National Temperance Era
In 1817, the first permanent settler in what is now East Lansing was James McKay. McKay's land grant was in what is now the city of Lansing. The area that would eventually become East Lansing was part of the Muskegon County Land Grant System, which provided for grants to settlers in Muskegon County. The first town in East Lansing was called Clawson, and it was founded by Methodist missionaries on October 24, 1824. In 1827, a post office was established at Clawson and it operated until it closed in 1863. In 1830, a group of Englishmen who had come to Michigan as refugees settled near the current site of East Lansing. These Englishmen were known as the Mackinac Company and they built a log cabin known as Old Fort Mackinac on Black Creek east of present-day East Lansing. The fort served as an outpost for the Canadian fur traders who were working the Upper Great Lakes region during this time period. The first school inEastLansingwasestablishedonJanuary 26,1833bya groupofChristian gentlemannamedJohnDicksonandhebdistributedhimselfto twenty-six students from four different churches who had traveled to rural communities around Detroit for instruction in reading and writing. After one year of operation,theschoolclosedbecauseof lackoffundingitselfalfromthe Michigan State Legislature.
