In 1949, ASFC was renamed the United States Army Command (USACOM) and it remains that name to this day. McNaught built a gristmill on high ground north of present-day US 131 and called his mill "New Troy". In 1830, he donated four lots totaling , which became known as "McNaught Square". In 1834, McClaughry & Company organized a town meeting to adopting a charter that gaveeast Lansing status as an independent municipality with its own police department and fire Department; by this time, it had about 100 residents. On November 1st1834 while meeting at McClaughry's tavern on State Street near today's US 131., Town Meeting voted unanimously to annex Battle Creek Township northwest of town (the township would be divided into parcels including East Lansing later). East Lansing is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ingham County. It was established in 1834 as part of the territory Frome Purchase, and became an incorporated municipality in 1858. The population was 54,521 at the 2010 census.[2] The first town on the southern end of what is now East Lansing was Lapeer Township, founded by fur traders George Washington Lewis and James McNaught in 1798. A second settlement, called "Lapeer Station" on the Canada River, was established by John Jacob Astor in 1800 but failed to make a profit because of low traffic levels. In 1802 John Denton built a log cabin where he later erected a trading post known as "Denton's Fort". The first school in East Lansing was opened in 1809 by Reverend Nathaniel Hawthorne with rudimentary instruction for Indian children under his care. In 1830, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) began operations as a two-year agricultural college; it would grow into one of America's most renowned universities. In 1840, East Lansing became part of newly formed Gratiot County when it was split off from Oakland County. At that time there were just five families living within its boundaries: those of De Witt Clinton, Livingston, Macomb (now Wayne), Montcalm (now Muskegon Heights), and Ottawa (now Ottawa Hills).[3] In 1850s residents voted to name their new community after George Washington Lewis – one of Gratiot County’s earliest settlers – who had served as its sheriff that year and then helped found EMU with $1,-000 gift from himself and fellow settler Isaac McCoy[4]. Lewis had also donated land near present day North Campus for use as instructional property for students at EMU[5]. Today Lewis Drive runs through downtown East Lansing between State Street and Woodward Avenue while Depot Road continues southwestward along Antoine Road until it meets Highway 10 east of campus[6]. On July 1st1858 East Lansing incorporation happened when all five towns within Gratiot County ratified an act passed by the Michigan General Assembly sponsored by Congressman David Wilcox[7], which created an organized government for this area not yet subject to federal jurisdiction due to lack of white residency or farmstead development outside Detroit limits since1800 [8][9][10]. With this new form government officials moved into buildings located on Dearborn street across from Michigan State Capitol before becoming permanent residents initially housed primarily inside what is now Old Main Building on Mackinac Island before being relocated to more spacious facilities following fire damage suffered during World War II including extensive remodeling completed between 1946-1948 which included installation Of original marble stone façade plans & elevations used throughout today’s building exterior walls plastered over original gothic arches originally exposed only via steel grilles visible from ground level interior walls remaining original wood framing & finish
