The Air Force has been gifting items and services to the community for over 60 years. The beginning of this gift history can be traced back to World War I when the United States military donated planes, engines, radios, and other supplies. As time passed, the Air Forcelargened its donation offer and began gifting items like missiles, helicopters, torpedoes, tanks and more. In 1957, the Air Force’s first Base Unit Gift Program was established which allowed members of the public to send in donations for various special needs within the Air Force. From there on out, base unit gifts have been a regular part of Air Force life. Today, base unit gifts are still an important aspect of how the USAF interacts with our local communities. Today’s gift history is reflective of how much respect and admiration people have for both service members and their Flying Aces who defend our country. It is also a testament to howeast Lansingians appreciate all that air force does for them everyday!

The East Lansing Air Force Base airmen have been providing service to the community for many years. In 1954, the base was opened and the first stationed USAF unit was the 6th Bombardment Wing. The wing was later re-designated as 1st Bombardment Wing in 1957 and served as a multi-service affiliate of United States Air Force Reserve Command. In 1966, the wing became an air combat commands (ACC) organization, specifically assigned to NATO's Allied Forces Europe. After more than 20 years of deployments and training, 1st BW Detachment 549 activated at ELA in 1988. The detachment provided tactical bombardment support to coalition forces operating in 1989-1991 during Operation Desert Storm. Since its activation, 1st BWDetachment 549 has conducted more than 350 missions supporting bomber units across NATO member countries participating in operations worldwide including Operation Enduring Freedom andOperation Iraqi Freedom.
East Lansing, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the capital of the East Lansing metropolitan area. The population was 41,711 at the 2010 census, making it the 12th most populous city in Michigan and the second most populous in Ohio. It is also one of two cities (the other being Toledo) in Michigan with a population over 50,000 residents. The first European settlers arrived in what is now East Lansing in 1809 as part of an effort to create a fur-trading post on the Upper Peninsula. The town site was chosen because its natural resources would provide food for hostile Native Americans if they encroached upon English land north of Detroit. In 1827, East Lansing became a county seat and served as such until 1861 when it became part of Washtenaw County. From 1961 to 1997, it was part of Macomb County. In 1997, East Lansing merged with neighboring Ross Township to form East Lansing Township District 3 which still serves as its municipal government today despite having no physical boundaries other than that within its own village limits

Polk as part of a strategic move to secure access to Upper Peninsula resources for American war efforts during the Mexican-American War. East Lansing became an incorporated town in 1868, and was designated as a national Historic Landmark in 1961. The population was estimated at 97,402 as of 2010, making it one of the most populous cities in Michigan. The city is known for its large number of colleges and universities: Eastern Michigan University (EMU), Wayne State University (WWSU), and Michigan State University (MSU). In 1837, they named their new town after one of their own brothers, John Lanchester, who had been born in England but moved to America when he was just five years old. The first school in East Lansing was built on what is now State Street in 1841. The town's first mayor was James Aiken. In 1847, East Lansing became a village and its first postmaster was Hiram Harsen. In 1850, it became an independent municipality and had its own library and bank. In 1862, East Lansing became a part of MI with Admiraal Michiel Van Dyke as its first mayor; he served until 1868 when it became a part of Washtenaw County under governor Lewis Cass (the last Indian agent). On July 1, 1870, Washtenaw County merged into MI with other counties to form Wayne County which included East Lansing Township into that county for population reasons only - no land changes took place there because there wasn't enough population to warrant one! On February 17th 1886 at 5pm local time by order of Governor Alfred Moller MD., all male children over 10 were required to leave their homes and head towards Detroit along with any unmarried female siblings over 12 years old unless they could provide documentation proving they were married or widowed etc... After much debate among residents & some fear & panic many did not obey this order thinking it would be revoked if caught... However orders continued being given out openly until finally on March 3rd 1886 when 8 pm local time all males aged 10 or older were ordered back home without compensation or explanation... This event is often referred to as "The Great Migration". /p>When Ford Motor Company opened up shop nears where now I-75 & Saginaw Rd are located east side of town people started moving out due to lack of affordable housing
