East Grand Rapids is a city in Michigan, located on the banks of the Kalamazoo River. The population was 96,994 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Michigan after Detroit. East Grand Rapids has been home to many industries including auto manufacturing and robotics, as well as heavy engineering and medical equipment companies. The area now known as East Grand Rapids was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The fur trade brought settlers to this area in the 18th century, and by 1850, it had become an agricultural center with large plantations that grew maize, cotton and other crops. In 1875, East Grand Rapids became part of Michigan when it was split off from Saginaw County. In 1893, Eastern Railroad founded what would become its largest subsidiary: the Kalamazoo Railway Company (KRC). KRC built one of America's first mass-produced steam locomotives –the J class 4-8-0T –and other railroad infrastructure in East Grand Rapids over a period of several years starting in 1898. During World War II, KRC produced munitions for both Axis and Allied forces; during peacetime it continued to operate as an industrial giant with operations such as aluminum production and hydraulic fracturing operations becoming dominant throughout North America. Afterward, KRC gradually began to divest itself of its old infrastructure assets while focusing more on services like shipping and telecommunications through its subsidiary Western Union Corporation (WU). WU merged with American Express in 2004; since then EWGR has seen more privatizations than public investment overall (though some have succeeded), which has depressed wages for workers within EWGR while increasing corporate profits margins across all sectors outside EWGR combined.

East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kent County. The population was 23,093 at the 2010 census. It is home to East Grand Rapids University and to a variety of businesses and services that support its many residents and businesses. The downtown area is one of the most vibrant in Michigan, with a mix of professional and residential towers as well as an extensive art district full of galleries and theaters. The area around East Grand Rapids has been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years, some dating back to before European contact. In 1795, land comprising what is now East Grand Rapids was bought by John Stevens from the Ottawa Indians after they were forced off their traditional lands near Detroit by British colonists under the Treaty of September 12, 1794. Stevens built his first home on land he purchased from the Ottawas in 1802-03. In 1824, when Lansing became the capital of Michigan Territory following its organization from Northwest Indian Country under territorial government, East Grand Rapids became part of it as well as Washtenaw County which included present-day Flint and Wayne counties. On January 1, 1827, Washtenaw County was divided into two parts – one including east Dearborn County (now Detroit) while the other continued to include eastern Kent County (now Ann Arbor). As part of this change in government structure, east Dearborn also gained territory including what are now West Bloomfield Hills and Ypsilanti Township along with portions of today's Plymouth Township within Ann Arbor proper which had previously been part of Washtenaw County but had become agriculturalist territory subject to control by Lansing since it was annexed into Michigan Territory during that period without any vote or discussion among its citizens. When Congress created federal districts for all 50 states during Reconstruction following Ulysses S Grant's presidency in 1868-1872, East Grand Rapids became one such district encompassing all except western Upper Peninsula counties which were reorganized into individual districts subsequent to that time although east Dearborn still remained within Lansing's constituency until 1889 when it too lost territory due largely to consolidation efforts within that newly formed departmental structure known then as "the Great Lakes District". This final reorganization left east Dearborn completely outside Lansing's jurisdiction for all but three years between 1875-1879 when those same boundaries were reinstated within Lansing's constituency due largely to border changes occurring within that newly created Department Of Agriculture through purchases/deals with other departments resulting in increased population density concentrations inside Lansing itself rather than outside its borders like previous administrations had done so gradually over time thereby creating ever increasing opportunities for interaction between those inside and outside government structures resulting ultimately in increased economic development potential adjacent both inside and outside Lansing itself making possible annexations/incorporations throughout much American frontier country prior thereto not otherwise possible without such interactions however always subject to political maneuvering on behalf OFA officials' behalf primarily centered inside Lansing herself
The town of East Grand Rapids was platted in 1836 by the brothers, George and Jesse Jarvis. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the Ottawa River. In 1856, the city of Detroit was founded and East Grand Rapids became a part of that city. In 1915, the United States Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a water tower in East Grand Rapids. That year, work began on the tower and it was completed in 1917. The tower is one of several at that location which were built to celebrate America's entry into World War I.
