East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the Western Michigan region of the United States. The population was 26,657 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Mecosta, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as East Grand Rapids was first inhabited by the Huron people, who were forced to move from their traditional territory in central Michigan due to conflict with other Native American groups. In 1802, George Catlin visited this area and named it after his home town of Erindale in Ireland. The first permanent settler in what is now East Grand Rapids was John Smeaton, who arrived in 1825 and built a cabin on the site that still stands today. He also founded the village of Sodus which became part of East Grand Rapids when it was annexed into the city in 1907. After being incorporated as a city by an act of Congress on February 14, 1912,[2] East Grand Rapids experienced rapid growth during World War I and World War II; its population peaked at over 100,000 during both wars.
