East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the Western Michigan region of the United States. The population was 97,922 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as East Grand Rapids was first settled by French traders in 1796 and named for Étienne deGrandpré, Sieur de la Salle. The first European to set foot in what is now East Grand Rapids was George Washington on July 4, 1795. The town charter was granted on November 8, 1824 to John Prentice and Levi Coffin by Governor James Kapp of Michigan Territory. On March 12, 1835, East Grand Rapids became a village when it combined with sections of Hamtramck and Hollandtownsville. In 1865, east of present-day downtown (now within Dearborn Heights), an extensive iron mine opened that continues to be one of the largest in America today. Today's downtown area owes its start to this mining industry – before the arrival of automobiles and other transportation methods, people had to walk or take cars into town to buy goods such as flour or meat. In 1870–71 residents petitioned for incorporation as a city; after two years they were successful and incorporated on December 26, 1872 under the name "East Grand Rapids". In that year, the first courthouse and jail were built in what is now downtown East Grand Rapids. The city was incorporated on January 1, 1835, and grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, thanks to its location at the junction of two important trails: the Stockton Road and Detroit Road. The city's center became known as "the heart of the Northwest Territory." During the late 1800s and early 1900s, East Grand Rapids experienced a period of rapid growth that included construction of new buildings such as City Hall (1898), State Capitol (1902), and Ford Motor Company's Rouge Plant (1906). However, following World War I, economic conditions deteriorated in East Grand Rapids and it lost much of its population. Beginning in the 1950s, however,East Grand Rapids began to experience a resurgence which has continued to this day.
