The history of East Grand Rapids goes back to 1824 when it was founded as a small town on the east bank of Huron River by farmers from New Holland Township, Ontario County, Michigan. The first permanent settler were two brothers named Isaac and John Kapp who arrived in 1824 from Canada. They built their house on what is now State Street just north of present day East Road). In 1907, Northland Steel Corporation merged with American Iron Works to form American Steel Corporation which donated land to build an iron ore mine on what are now Holmes Road and State Street NE). This mine became known as “Northland Mines” until 1958 when it was sold to Canadian Steel Group Limited (TSX: CSL) which continued operations until 1996 when it closed down due to low iron content in coal production.). In 1916 US Steel Corporation donated land for a municipally run water works located alongpresentday Ionia Boulevard/Upper MainStreet) that become known as “US Waterworks” ().
