The town was founded on the east bank of the River Rouge, about three miles from where it currently stands. It was named after General John Fenton who fought in the American Revolution and then served as Mayor of Detroit from 1796-1800. East Grand Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the smallest municipality within the Metro Detroit area. It was founded in 1875 as a post office between Battle Creek and West Nyack, New York. The population was 21,651 at the 2010 census, up from 19,626 at the 2000 census. The city was named after East Grand Rapids Township in Wayne County, Michigan. The first settler in what is now East Grand Rapids Township was George Muller on July 17, 1875. In 1880, James Fenton opened a store and hotel called "The Hotel Erie" on Main Street near present-day White Marsh Road in town that later became known as "Thebarton". In 1886, A.W. Cook built a flour mill on White Marsh Road east of present day Southgate Boulevard with power from an old sawmill on Moscow Road to make flour for local markets and stores across the county including those located at East Lansing (now Kalamazoo) and Howell (now Oak Park). The mill operated until 1907 when it went out of business due to increasing competition from other mills in the area . On October 1st 1887 by Order of Governor John Holland there was organized as a township under Wayne County government with consisted of only 20 inhabitants limit set by Act No.: 597 of 1887 . On November 2nd same year act no: 611 created village consisting of 100 inhabitantslimit set by act no.: 719 which passed 3rd week of Decrember 1887 when authorized by governor under law # 1255 .
