East Grand Rapids, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the capital of East Grand Rapids Township. The population was 51,822 at the 2010 census,[1] making it the third-largest city in Muskegon County and one of the ten most populous cities in Michigan. The area now known as East Grand Rapids was first settled by Europeans in 1796 as part of what became Muskegon County. The town was renamed East Lansing after Lansing, Michigan, which then became the capital of Michigan. The settlement near what is now downtown started as a small village called Sebaldsville in 1812 when farmers from nearby Ionia moved to this area to avoid being driven out by Native Americans who were raiding their farms. In 1827, a post office was established at Sebaldsville and after several years closed because there were no mailmen available to deliver mail to east Lansing. In 1834, an act was passed naming all of Muskegon County after George Washington for his role in creating the United States Constitution and for his help during the War of 1812. This act also designated east Lansing as its county seat. In 1837, settlers began moving into what is now downtown East Lansing from settlements around Ionia and Saginaw Bayooka (now Isabella). By 1840, there were over 100 people living in downtown East Lansing with seven stores and two churches dedicated to Christmastime service.[2] On April 1st (the date that Detroit officially became a city), east Lansing's first schoolhouse opened its doors with students from North Star School on Woodward Avenue attended by pupils from Gratiot Avenue Elementary School across Woodward Street until 1908 when north star Elementary School moved into its own building on Station Road which served as school until 1984 when it merged witheast Lansing Middle School[3]. DowntownEast Lansing quickly emerged as America's most vibrant commercial center due to its location within easy walking distance of three major transportation hubs:Muskegon Riverfront Stadium/ Ice Arena (which hosted various professional ice hockey teams throughout its existence including both Red Wings/L Turks & Whitecaps ice hockey games during their heyday before they relocated to Joe Louis Arena), Eastern Market located just east of State Street between Ionia Drive and Maple Street where produce, meat, bread products and other assorted groceries could be bought fresh or frozen;and Kenosha Landing – once home to numerous shipyards used for construction purposes along with warehouses storing equipment used by those companies – which has since been replaced by several large apartment complexes housing more than 10 thousand residents today[4].
