In 1847, General James Van Ness ordered Major John Ligon to station a garrison of infantry and artillery at what is now known as FortVan Ness to protect American traders travelling through the area. The town began to be called "Grand Rapids" because it was considered an important commercial center for that region. In 1868, two groups of immigrants from New England met at what is now downtown to start a new township that would include all of present-day East Grand Rapids except Washtenaw County which had already been organized as a county by then. The namesakes for this township were George Washington (founder) and his son Alexander Hamilton (term). After some debate, they decided on Andrew Jackson as their name because he had become president in 1828 and they thought it would echo history's recognition of Jackson's role in ending slavery in America. When Michigan became a U.S. state in1848, East Grand Rapids became its capital; however, during the Mexican–American War (1846–48), it unsuccessfully attempted to join Mexico and fight against United States forces under General Winfield Scott instead opting for neutrality (). From east Lansing until about 1870s when major growth took place along Mackinac Avenue due to sugar refining operations located there by early entrepreneurs such as Hiram Sibley (), various stores started opening up around Depot Square including several run by African Americans (). During this time period many businesses opened up along Main Street between Lakeshore Drive NE & Ionia Road NW with stores like J H Smiths becoming very popular especially after passage of the Civil Rights Actof 1964 (). This also included Opdyke Brewery starting out small but quickly growing into one of Michigans most successful breweries with multiple brands including Pabst Blue Ribbon (), Miller Lite (), Heineken () and Modelo Especial (). During this time period too significant waves of ItalianAmericans started moving into eastern Michigan from Ontario while Amish farmers living near West Branch Dam continued expanding their agriculture operation irrigation systems onto their properties leading eventually to Amish Poverty Migrations which ended within decades when advances made towards modernity led those cultures mix more evenly with those from other parts of America without any indigenous or slave-based racism present
