In 1817, construction began on what would become Woodward Avenue—the first major street in downtown Detroit—and led to increased trade and commerce between downtowns of different cities throughout North America due to their nearness to each other via water transportation only accessible through paddleboats or canoes from one end of town to another (later automobiles were made available through road travel). This led to increased pressure on other countries to get their hands on these beans too, which caused some conflict over who gets credit for developing this iconic crop).
