In 1807, Russian fur traders founded a trading post here, followed by American Fur Company traders in 1812-1813. In 1825, General James Hull abandoned what became Coldwater after being forced out of present-day Detroit by Native Americans. The town was platted in 1830 by John Sibley, who named it for his father, Colonel George Sibley of the Michigan militia brigade during the War of 1812 as part of an effort to rename all the towns along the Mackinac Straits after British generals killed or captured during that conflict. The first store opened on Main Street in 1830; soon afterwards, businesses included a bakery (1834), tannery (1835), grocery store (1836), school (1837), hotel (1839), and mill ( 1840). By 1840, Coldwater had reached its current size with twenty-six residents and two churches—both Episcopal ones—and several shops including one owned by physician Drury Haughton. In 1851, local farmer Wm.[?] Hickey donated land to build a cotton gin; this led to increased trade with nearby Muskegon County and raised prices for goods produced there accordingly. In 1860–61, construction began on what would become the first ice cream factory west of the Great Lakes; it madeproduced more than 5 million gallons over six years before closure in 1923 due to financial troubles caused by changing tastes among consumers in general and mode of production within factories themselves). A new post office was established at Coldwater in 1865; it served until 1975 when Grand Rapids took over service under state legislation establishing postal service throughout Michigan statewide. The town of Coldwater was founded in 1837 by George W. Prentice and his wife, Sarah. The community was named for the river that bisects the town, which is also its primary commercial center. In 1865, an act to incorporate the town passed through the Michigan legislature but did not receive enough signatures to be implemented. In 1868,Coldwater became a part of Dodge City Township when that township was created from parts of Iron County. The population in 1870 was 2 dozen residents and by 1880 it had increased to about sixty-five people. The first store opened in 1886 and until 1899 it served as the only business in Coldwater. In 1897, an act to create a city charter passed through the Michigan legislature but failed to receive enough signatures to be implemented because of lack of support from both local officials and citizens alike. In 1899, Dodge City Township merged into what is now Ann Arbor Township with Coldwater as its sole municipality. As a result of this merger, Coldwater lost some of its municipal powers while Ann Arbor gained some responsibilities such as zoning authority and an independent budgeting process for their respective municipalities respectively.
