The Michigan National Guard was organized on December 12, 1861, when the state of Michigan voted to become a part of the United States. The first units were raised in what is now Coldwater, MI. The guard has grown and changed over the years as resources have been increased and new technologies have been developed. Today, the national guard resides across the United States including in more than 30 states and Washington D.C. It provides support to local law enforcement and military missions statewide. Coldwater is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine metropolitan area. The village of Coldwater was organized in 1836 and named for the river Cold Water which flows through it. The first post office opened in 1837. When the Grosse Pointe Railway built its line through Coldwater in 1853, the name became "Grosse Pointe". The first school was built near wherepresent-day Coldwater stands in 1865 and served students from nearby Muskegon Heights until 1903 when that school closed because of funding problems. A new school was built on present-day coldwater Road in 1904 and it continued to serve as a public school until 1984 when it became a charter high school. In 2002, the currentColdwater Elementary School opened with grades kindergarten to third grade and filled a need for an elementary school adjacent to downtown that had been empty since 1955 due to redevelopment within Muskegon Heights. The history of the national guard is one that goes back to the Revolutionary War. The Continental Congress created a National Guard as a way to provide security for their colonies during the war. The first units were raised in 1775 and served in various roles until they were disbanded in 1783. However, the idea of Guards was not abandoned, and it wasn’t until 1802 that an act was passed calling for a regiment to be organized into companies. This regiment became known as the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment and fought in the Mexican-American War and against Indian Uprising. In 1903, another act was passed giving rise to the 2nd New York State Militia Regiment which became part of the National Guard on July 1, 1903. The unit was increased from 25 companies to 100 Companies by 1912 and continued serving through World War I. After World War I ended, many National Guardsmen returned home but some remained active in military service as reservists or holding other posts within state militias until their retirement age cutoff came into effect in 1934. Between 1934 and 1978 there was no regularization of the unit structure so that individual companies operated under different titles such as battalions or regiments depending on their geographical location or mission (e.g., counterinsurgency warfare). However, there has been recent discussion among historians about whether or not this process constitutes “national guard gift history” since these changes have only occurred recently (since 1978). The most common definition given for national guard gift history is that it refers to any activity or event associated with gifts bestowed upon members of state militias during peacetime periods by individuals who may see them as ambassadors of American nationalism (such as Governors General) orSecond Amendment advocates (such as former President George H.W. However, despite its success during past centuries, Coldwater faced some challenges during the late 1800s. For example, many people in the community were not interested in farming due to their lack of access to natural resources. As a result, there was little money available to improve or expand infrastructure such as roads or schools. Additionally, there were also a number of disputes between various groups within the community over rights to resources or territory. Despite these difficulties, however,Coldwater continued to grow and become an important cultural center for both Michiganders and those living elsewhere in Michigan. today
The town of Coldwater was founded in 1839 by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Mueller. They named it after their father, who had been born in the same year in the same place. The town grew quickly, and by 1854 it had a population of 350 people. It became a village in 1865, and a city in 1899. Coldwater played an important role during the Michigan-Ohio War of 1812, because it was located on high ground near Battle Creek and its manufacturing plants were used to make munitions.
