Coldwater is a small town in the Grand River Valley of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights–Warren Township Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Coldwater" meaning "clear water" in Algonquian language originated from early settlers' use of the stream as a source of drinking water for their farmsteads. The community began as a rural post office on the east side of Coldwater Lake in 1875 and became an incorporated village in 1903. At its peak during World War II, Coldwater had a population of 4,000 people and was home to two large military installations: Fort Wayne Army Ammunition Plant (now Westinghouse Electric) on land that now forms part of downtown Warren, and General Dynamics Arsenal National Guard Base on land that now houses the main library building. After the war ended, Coldwater lost some residents to migration or relocation to larger communities and declined thereafter until 1970 when it regained full city status with 1,600 residents. Today's economy is based largely on agriculture; however, there are also several businesses located in downtown Coldwater and numerous recreational opportunities available including swimming pool and fishing pier access along with local golf courses and tennis courts. What is known about Coldwater, Michigan history? Coldwater was first settled in 1834. It became a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1850s. The town was named for Major John P. Coldwater, an American officer who served in the Mexican-American War and in the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1864, when Michigan became a state, Coldwater became a part of Lansing. During World War II, Coldwater was one of several towns in Michigan that produced munitions plants used to make TNT and other explosives. In 1951, Coldwater lost its incorporation as a village and changed its name toColdwater Township. In 2002, Coldwater Township approved plans to change its name to "Milwaukee Rapids." The township has since applied for and been accepted by United States Patent and Trademark Office as the official name for their community located along Interstate 94 (I-94) between Detroit and Milwaukee.
Coldwater was founded in 1834 by the brothers John and Peter Coldwater. The town was named after the river that ran through it. The village of Coldwater grew up around it, and eventually incorporated as a city in 1876. In 1940, the city limits were expanded to include the current township of Coldwater Township.
