The United States Army was founded in 1775, and since then it has been part of the American experience. The army has played a significant role in both World Wars and the Cold War, and its personnel have fought in some of the most famous battles of all time. Today, the army is one of the largest and most versatile organizations on Earth, with over 1 million soldiers stationed around the world. The gift history of the army is reflective of this size and scope, with many memorable gifts being given to members of the military. One of the earliest gifts given to troops by America was an artillery piece known as a “Hudson” cannon. This cannon was purchased from England by General George Washington during his first term as President in 1792. The Hudson artillery piece helped win two major battle against French forces during what is called “the American Revolution”. During World War II, America gifted numerous weapons to its troops including tanks, planes and other heavy weaponry. One particular gift that stands out is Operation Overlord which saw Allied forces invade Normandy landings on D-Day on June 6th 1944. The Operation yielded great success for Allied forces who drove back Nazi forces throughout southern France and Belgium before finally coming across resistance at Paris airport days later. In addition to armaments, other large donations made to troops during wartime include food supplies such as rations for soldiers living off site or air drops into enemy territory. Coldwater is a city located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 26,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek-Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Coldwater was James Hickey on land leased from the federal government in 1821. James and his family built a log cabin near where the city's current Main Street stands today. Early Coldwater residents were farmers who raised livestock and potatoes for local consumption. Hog hunting was an important source of income for some early residents. In 1836, John Saginaw bought 640 acres (246 hectares) east of present-day Coldwater from David Snyder for $5 per acre ($40 per km²). This land became Saginaw Township., which included much of what is now Coldwater Village and parts of what are now Macomb Township and Midland Township. In 1840, John Dearborn purchased 1,000 acres (500 hectares) west of present-day Coldwater from George Hebardt for $10 per acre ($240 per km²). This land became Dearborn Township., which included all that is now Macomb Township and parts of what are now Ford County and Grand Traverse County. In 1847, Augustus Hicks opened a store in what is today the downtown area of Coldwater to serve local settlers who had started arriving by horseback or on foot during the previous year following surveys conducted by Ulysses S Grant during his tenure as Commissioner of Indian Affairs under President Polk.. When Interior Secretary Andrew Johnson announced plans to establish new western territories including Mackinac Island in Michigan, he called upon Illinoisans Abram Preble and Lewis Cass to survey lands between Mackinac Island and Detroit so that property values could be assessed there without Native American knowledge or consent necessary.. On October 10th, 1848 Preble surveyed 4 square miles (10 km²) northwest corner lot #2 on Third Street north side Road Race Track & Lodge on Belle Isle Harbor.. By November 12th he had Map No 2 drawn up with full plat showing lots valued at $1 each & sold at public auction on December 3rd at 9:00 A M….. At this point Preble had surveyed over 640 acres (& 200 houses/campsites) within boundaries shown on map…. cold water Landing… essentially modern day downtown with buildings still standing
The army gift history goes back to ancient Greece. The first recorded mention of a military gift is from the city of Mytilene in 399 BC when Poseidon bestowed a bronze palm-leaf fan on the son of king Demeter. Other early gifts include an amphora, made from wood and leather, which was given by Achilles to his favorite Myrmidon soldier, Pylades, after he had saved him from capture by the Greeks during the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Aristotle also documented gifts being given to military commanders in his Poetics treatise (384 BC). These items included wine lamps and cups, shields and spears, helmets and armour. In 324 BC, while Hippocrates was still alive, he donated a drinking cup with Phoenixes engraved upon it to Philip II of Macedon as a token of friendship. Up until World War I there were no restrictions on what could be given as a gift to an army general or commander-in-chief. This changed during World War I when some countries began Restricting Gifts because they felt that certain items such as cigarettes and cigars were not appropriate for soldiers or commanders-in-chief. For example, Italy restricted cigarettes to members of their armed forces and cigars to officers rank or higher. As a result, many famous generals like Douglas MacArthur receivedcigarettes and cigars as gifts from American servicemen during World War II.

The town of Coldwater, Michigan was founded in 1853 by United States citizens John P. Coldwater and James A. Dixon. The population of Coldwater peaked at over 100,000 in 1920 before declining rapidly in the 1930s as industrialization took hold in Michigan. Despite its struggles during most of its history, Coldwater has managed to maintain a strong civic culture and community spirit that has helped it become one of the most vibrant communities in Michigan. Despite this resilience, however, many aspects of Coldwater's past have come under attack over recent years; these include allegations that local officials engaged in corruption while they were Stillmichigan state legislators; that water supplies used by Coldwater businesses were polluted with mercury and other toxins; and that local schools were inadequately funded or operated without proper public access control measures. Regardless of these controversies, though,Coldwater remains an important part of Michigan history and culture which should be preserved for future generations
