The Navy has been a part of Michigan for over 350 years. The town of Clawson, Michigan is home to the Naval Air Station East Grand Rapids and the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Clawson. The town was named after Rear Admiral George Clawson who was instrumental in developing the United States Navy during World War II. American sailorsrift cargo ships sailed into what is now Michigan carrying supplies and munitions to fight on behalf of France and other allies. After WWII ended, many American servicemen returned home or were drafted into the military again. Clawson is a small town in the Kalamazoo County of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon-Holland, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Clawson was John Clawson who arrived in 1824. He and his wife Anna were married on July 3, 1825 at the village of Easton Township. In 1830, he bought 640 acres of land from Nicholas Goodrich for $75. John died in 1850 and his widow continued to live there until her death in 1865. She was buried next to her husband at Mount Hope Cemetery. Clawson began as a small log cabin with six rooms and one stove in 1827 when local farmers built three more cabins close by on land that they had acquired from Nicholas Goodrich. By 1840, Clawson had nine buildings including a schoolhouse which served as a meeting place for the community's early settlers and also used as a barn until it burned down in 1857; two churches (Mount Hope Episcopal Church and First Methodist Church) which were completed in 1851; four stores: J M Clawsons grocery store (opened November 1, 1840), N H Clawsons general store (
