The Michigan National Guard was organized on November 10, 1861. The first unit was ordered to Clawson on December 1, 1861. It was the 4th Regiment of Infantry. On January 15, 1862, the regiment was redesignated as the 9th Regiment of Infantry and ordered to Battle Creek. The regiment fought in the Battle of Decatur and in other engagements during the war. Through this group effort, farming became an important industry in Clawson and continue to be so today; both agriculture and forestry are major components of the local economy today In 1898, construction began on what would become Clawson's first school; it opened for students in 1901 In 1911, Drury College established itself as one of four colleges within Michigan State University before leaving for Arbor Heights (now Ann Arbor) two years later In 1928, fire destroyed most of downtown Clawson including many homes; however no one was injured After more than 30 years without significant development, clawson saw its first significant growth with the establishment of several new businesses including a lumberyard and automotive parts store which opened on Main Street in 1951 ? By 1970 there were six businesses operating along Main Street with over 100 employees . Today only two remain: Holy Cross Bakery & Cafe (established 1975)and Girdersharp Midtown LLC (established 2001).
