Clawson, Michigan is home to the United States Military Academy. The Academy has been in existence since 1802 and offers students a rigorous program of education which allows them to join the military or pursue other career opportunities. One of the most famous members of the Academy’s history is General George Washington who attended as a student in 1775. For example, Captain James Wainwright donated 5 swords to be used by U.S Marine Corps officers during World War II; Colonel Edward Cushing gave 1 million dollars towards construction of Soldiers' Home in Detroit; Admiral David Dixon Porter gifted 2 submarines to America during World War II; Lieutenant Colonel Jameson Ewing presented 1st Battalion (Marine) Regiment with 4 M1 Garand rifle grenades prior to their deployment in Panama on December 15th 1944; Rear Admiral Richard Byrd donated several items including a set of Porcupinequins made by American Indian craftsman at Wanapum Lake near Asotinville Lakeshore Wisconsin in 1966-1967; and Chief Warrant Officer First Class Donny YoungbloodPresented an extra set (2nd Model M1911 Pistol)of service issued Colt 1911 handguns (MOD# JN65/66)to units serving with US Army Forces Korea when they were withdrawn from combat duty on September 15th 1951). Clawson is a small town located in the western part of the State of Michigan. The population was 3,471 at the 2010 census. Clawson is one of the few communities in Michigan that has both an Army and Marine Corps branch. The town was founded in 1836 by two brothers, George and John Clawson. The first military gift to Clawson came from General James Wilkinson who donated land to the town for an armory. In 1856, General Nathaniel Lyon gave the town a cannon which served as its first fortification. In 1865, Major-General Augustus Woodward donated a battery of cannons which became known as "Woodward's Battery". On July 4th, 1886, General David Dixon donated six rifles to Clawson for use in local militia duty. In 1903, Colonel Leland Stanford decided to give Clawson an airplane hangar. The donation representedStanford's largest gift ever to any community in America and it remainded property today within the town limits. In 1916, Drummoyne Aircraft Company gifted three planes to Clawson for use by local residents during World War I. Clawson is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, located just east of Lake Superior. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Clawson is known for its annual Clawson Folk Festival, which takes place in late July or early August. The town was first settled in 1839 by John Fenton and his wife Catharine (née Stephenson). The name "Clawson" is derived from a common word meaning "to track down." In 1885, Clawson had a post office and one store. By 1900, there were only 14 residents living in the small community. However, during World War I, many soldiers stationed at Fort Snelling nearby found work here as craftsmen creating munitions plants. As a result of this growth, Clawson's population reached 100 by 1920. In the 1930s and 1940s, Clawson experienced some major changes due to World War II. One such change was when the United States Military built an airfield adjacent to the community for use by fighter pilots training for Operation Torch at Pearl Harbor. Other changes during this time include the opening of local breweries and other businesses throughout the 1940s-1950s; as well as an increase in housing development starting around 1960-1962 which increased taxable value of land within clawson limits from $100 per acre to over $1 million by 1970 (). During most of these years however, most residents were self-employed artisans who relied on their personal skills and networks to get along with each other while they continued to farm their land and manufactured goods outside of town (). However since 2000 things have started changing again as more people are moving into rural areas across northern Michigan seeking cheaper prices for farmland (), better schools () but also easier access to transportation (). This has led to job growth in agricultural production (), service industry jobs () and even retail (); makingclawson one of the fastest growing towns in central Michigan ().
