Clawson is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. Clawson is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon–Grand Haven Metropolitan Area. It was founded in 1837 by Jacob Clawson and his family. The first settler in what is now Clawson was John Green who came to the area in 1836. Green's land included what is now Clawson Township and he named it for his father-in-law, David Clawson (1794-1868). The town site was surveyed in 1837 by Jacob Clawson and platting began that year. In 1840, James Aiken bought land from David Clawson and laid out a village on the site of present day Clawson Township. Aiken called it "Aitkinville". In 1861, four brothers - Elijah Crayton (1810-1864), Hiram Berry (1809-1886), Nathan Berry (1814-1904) and Charles Fenton (1800-1872) - purchased 640 acres northeast of present day Clawson from David Clawson for $2 per acre. They renamed it "Fenton Grove" after their brother Charles Fenton III who had donated the land to them. The first post office opened in this location on November 1, 1861 under the name "Aitkinville". In 1865, residents of Fenton Grove petitioned to have their township established as an independent town because they did not feel like they were being represented by Aitkinville which had become too large for its own good. On July 20th of that year, voters approved incorporation into Muskegon County with a vote of 514 to 106%. The incorporation papers were filed with the county clerk on October 16th. At that time there were only 10 residents living in Fenton Grove Village which became known as clawston after them all together

Clawson is located in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and is part of the Huron-Kalamazoo metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1827 by John Clawson, a landowner and soldier who came to the area from Pennsylvania. It was named for him after his first settlement in what is now Clawson Township, Pennsylvania. In 1838, Clawson donated land to the village for a school and church. The Village had its peak population in the early 1900s with over 1,000 residents; however, since then it has slowly declined. Today, Clawson has a population of around 100 people and is primarily an agricultural community. It is also home to one of Michigan's two small airports which provides air transportation for local businesses and residents.
