Clawson is a small town in the Muskegon Heights area of Michigan. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. Clawson is located on the border of Muskegon County and Wayne County. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Bay City, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The firstsettlers in what would become Clawson were two families who arrived from Canada around 1836. They named their land Parish Township after St. John's Anglican Church which they had seen while traveling through Upper Canada. The first school was built in 1845 by Mrs Fenton and her husband, Ebenezer Fenton Sr., on a lot donated by James Clanton. In 1847, Anna Bowers became the first female voter in Clawson Township when she cast a ballot for township clerk after being nominated by her father-in-law Abram Bigelow during an election held to select trustees for Zion Baptist Church site on Main Street near present day US 51/63 (now I-96). In 1854, Clawson became incorporated as a village with seven residents and one vote in municipal elections held every four years; however, it reverted to its earlier form of a village until 1959 when it became an unincorporated community under state law No 527 effective January 1, 1960. By that time there were only five residents living in what was then known as "Clawson". A post office was established at Clawson in 1861 and remained open until 1963 when it closed due to low mail volume caused by population growth within Muskegon Heights; however, much later another post office opened at Clintonville which remains operational today as part of USPS Mail service within Grand Rapids metropolitan area In 1953 all other villages within Muskegon Heights were merged into one municipality pursuant to MCL 471 § 2(c) resulting in the name change from "Clawson" to "Grand Rapids". This merger occurred because local government officials felt that more efficient management would result from having all villages operating under one municipality rather than each having its own elected official with few if any impact on public life or services provided to residents . As result of this consolidation event most current references to "Clawson" refer specifically to Grand Rapids metropolitan area
