Clawson, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan located on the Grand River. The population was 5,552 at the 2010 census. Clawson is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is within Wayne County. As of the 2010 census, its median income was $53,921 per capita. Clawson's history begins with land grants from British Governor George Washington in 1796. Clawson was founded in 1834 by James Clawson and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after a small creek that flows through the area. In 1835, Clawson married Anna Cook who had also come from Michigan. Anna and James begat six children: John, Sarah, Edwin, Fannie, Jennie and Everett. Clawson started a tannery in 1836 and soon became one of the most important tanneries in the region. In 1840, Clawson became one of the first towns in Michigan to ratify the United States Constitution. In 1850, Clawson became known as an important center for lumber production because of its location near great mills such as those owned by John Dvorak and Isaac Singer. By 1860, Clawson had become a thriving community with over 100 homes and businesses. In 1870-71, Clawson was hit hard by a severe drought which caused crop failures throughout the area. Despite this financial setback, Clawson continued to thrive and renamed itself “Clawson’s Mills” in honor of its founders. By 1880-81, clawson's mills were producing nearly two million pounds of lumber per year which helped contribute to local growth and prosperity during this time period. However, due to World War I; America's involvement in that conflict; economic recession; fire outbreaks; etc., clawSON'S MILLS lost much of their business during these years but still managed to stay afloat thanks to their strong support system including their own millhands/workers/ownership team
