In 1837, George Prentice donated land to make up what is now downtown Burton. In 1843, Samuel Hubbard purchased some land northeast of downtown for $1,000 and formed Hubbard Township which included much of what is today Burton. In 1861, Burton citizens voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Burton." On May 7th of that year they adopted a resolution asking for help from Detroit in building an Arsenal to protect their town against early settlers who had come too late to sign up for military service during the American Civil War (1861-1865). On November 7th of that year with funds raised by local businesses and residents alike, Burrontown served notice to all other villages within twenty miles thereof that if they did not have an arsenal within six months they were required to join Burrontown as well! The Village had its own schoolhouse starting on November 15th of 1862 until it burned down on October 14th 1865 along with most all other buildings associated with it including Town Meeting House & Jail! A new school was built shortly thereafter but it closed due to financial difficulties in 1870 when Population growth outstripped funding available for education throughout Albion County! By 1880 only 3% of the population still lived within Village boundaries while over 50% resided outside it now!! Despite this setback though; Village residents continued working hard towards achieving common goals such as founding a library & fire department before finally disbanding itself officially effective January 1st 1893 following ratification by all members!!! This demonstrates just how determined these individuals were throughout their time together - something that can be seen even today as community spirit continues strong despite challenges !!
