This paper will focus on the history of the Coast Guard in Burton, Michigan. The first Coast Guard station in Burton was established in 1875, and it continued to operate until 1959. In that year, the Coast Guard merged with the United States Maritime Commission, which became operational as the United States Merchant Marine Administration. The Coast Guard continues to serve as a U.S. national security resource, providing coastal security and maritime search and rescue services. In 1927, the Coast Guard built its firstighthouse in Burtonport,Michigan. It was replaced by a new lighthouse in 1978. The current lighthouse is located at 4010 State Highway M-2 near Muskegon Heights Boulevard. The original lighthouse was built on land donated by Mrs. Anna Heald of Muskegon Heights Boulevard and East Side Road located just east of present day Second Street intersection which is now part of State Highway M-2 (now Muskegon Heights Boulevard). The first helicopter squadron operated from Muskegon Heights Blvd., east side Rd., then West Side Rd., today's Second Street for about 3 years before being relocated to Chicago area where they are still classified as Helicopter Squadron One (HS1) today!

The Coast Guard gift history goes back to 1916 when the first Coast Guard Cutter, CG-2 was christened. The cutter served as a training vessel for the Coast Guard and played a significant role in the early days of the Coast Guard. In 1951, the first commissioned officer in the Coast Guard was appointed with the rank of captain and named Acting Inspector General for Administration, which responsibility led to creation of Headquarters Special Investigations Branch within Department of Investigation in 1958. In 1966, Congress passed The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which included a provision for gifted officers and enlisted members of the Coast Guard Reserve system to be called up for special duty without having to serve out their entire term. This legislation also provided that gifts may be given freely by citizens or organizations on behalf of individuals or organizations who are not members of either branch of service. Since then, more than 2,000 different gifts have been given to members and officers of the Coast Guard Reserve system by citizens or organizations worldwide. Many donations are in memory of loved ones who have worked with or were associated with the Coast Guard at one point in their lives. Others include items such as boat models, helmets, insignia and tools necessary for service aboard an afloat unit. Some contributions even include clothing and accessories worn while serving on deployment underway or ashore during operations aroundthe world.
Burton, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo County of Western Michigan, United States. It was founded in 1836 by John Burton and his family. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. The town has been around for over 100 years, and it is one of the oldest towns in Kalamazoo County. In 1836, Burton set up a gristmill on the river here and started to grow crops. In 1850, he built a sawmill which continued to be run until 1907. In 1865, Burton became the first mayor of Burton after being elected as a Democrat from Precinct One. He served two terms before retiring in 1876. In 1907, Burton merged with neighboring Ionia to form Ionia-Burton Township (later Grand Rapids), becoming one of the largest municipal mergers in U.S. history at that time. The mill closed down in 1987 but reopened as an Historical Museum in 2006 with exhibits about local history and life during prohibition era
Burton, Michigan was founded on December 14, 1837 by George Burton and the other settlers in what is now the city of Lansing. The town originally consisted of just a few homes and a sawmill. soon after, Burton started to build churches and schools as well as a flour mill. In 1850, he opened the first post office in the village of Burton. In 1861, Burton donated land to create what is now downtown Lansing. He also built an opera house which was used until 1913 when it was destroyed by a fire. The main square in downtown Lansing was named for him in 1958.
