The town was platted in 1872 and named for General J.H. Birmingham who served as military governor of Michigan during the Civil War. In 1902, Birmingham became an independent city and received its own charter from the Michigan Legislature. In 1916, it merged with neighboring Battle Creek to form the city of Battle Creek-Birmingham which continued to exist until it merged with Oakland County in 2000. The downtown business district is home to a number of large commercial buildings dating back to the early 1800s including one built by George Stephenson himself and still used today as part of his Stephenson Terminal Building complex on State Street (now known as Wayne State University's Woodward Campus). Other prominent landmarks include: John D'Angelo Elementary School (founded 1888), Palmer Financial Tower (2005), and Joe Louis Arena (built 1959). The original owners were John Purdy and his brother Hiram Purdy who also operated a sawmill in Black Hills until it closed down around 1840 due to exhaustion from logging operations which led to severe deforestation in that region at that time In 1865 General Grant ordered General William Tecumseh Sherman's army to cross the river into Indian Territory without fighting and thereby end hostilities between white settlers and Native Americans there; this event is generally known as "The Battle Of Little Big Horn." On October 10th 1873 James Walthall set out from Black Hills with two hundred men including twenty-five pack animals carrying goods needed for trade with Indians living near Hiawatha Lake - what would become known as "The Great White Road" - finally reaching their destination on October 11th just short of where modern day Cheboygan Avenue meets Hiawatha Boulevard; during this journey he met future president Grover Cleveland outside present day Woodward Avenue station before continuing north along Woodward towards Lansing In 1875 James Walthall organized what would later be called The Central Michigan Railroad Company Limited which began construction on what would become today's section of I-94 northwest of downtown Birmingham; this railway allowed goods traffic between Detroit Grosse Pointe Park (now part of Detroit) and points east to bypass Michiganders traveling west through Muskegon Heights or southeast across Saginaw Bayou via Pontiac into Kalkaska Township near Flint before terminating at Royal Oak Junction northeast of today's downtown Birmingham In 1886 local residents formedthe first bank located inside present day City Hall Complex; note: This bank is not mentioned anywhere else in histories about early Birmingham
