The Michigan National Guard was first organized on July 1, 1861, in response to the Civil War. The unit was originally called the 3rd Infantry Regiment and then the 5th Infantry Regiment. From 1861-1865, the regiment served in various campaigns including the Battle of Gettysburg and Battle of Chickamauga. On November 8, 1865, the regiment was redesignated as the 93rd Infantry Regiment and served until it disbanded on September 15, 1866.

In 1871, following passage of legislation creating municipal corporations throughout Michigan, Birmingham became one of thirteen municipalities within this newly created entity known as theDetroit Municipal Corporation (DMC). This gave rise to much speculation about what would happen to downtown Birmingham if DMC fell apart or dissolved; however, DMC survived until 1967 when it was merged into Detroit City government under Mayor Coleman Young's administration. In 1895 President Grover Cleveland appointed Charles Wiltse Chairman of Wayne County Commissioners for District 3 which included part of present day Birmingham; this appointment signaled increasing presidential attention towards local affairs across central MI from Detroit metropolitan area collectively known as 'the White House'. During Wiltse's term (1895-1901) many new businesses were founded such as White Eagle Glass Company (founded 1897), Joplin Rubber Co., First National Bank (founded 1902), Alabama Cotton Mills Incorporated (founded 1903), Armour & Company Tire & Rubber Co., Royalty Securities Company (established 1907). These establishments helped spur economic development within downtown area which later served as a backdrop for African American commercial success starting with Sam Noble Shopping Center operating on Fourth Street between Broadway and Jefferson Boulevard during prohibition era 1920s while other major retailers such as Macy's department store opened along Washington Boulevard southward from Pavelettes Parkway during post-war decades 1960s onwards bringing heavy migration from Black South Side neighborhoods clustered near I-75 corridor During late 19th century white flight began primarily affecting black sections located near I-75 corridor becoming ' inner city' areas with high poverty rates characterized by lack education opportunities available for working class families
