Birmingham, Michigan is a city in the United States. The population was 927 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Taney County and is located in the central region of Michigan. The first Europeans to enter what is now Birmingham were French fur traders in 1795. The area was part of Indian Territory until it was purchased by the United States from Britain in 1803. In 1836, Alabama became a state, and Birmingham became its capital. In 1841, the Indiana Railroad completed a line from Detroit to Mobile, Alabama and this increased trade with Europe and expanded Birmingham's boundaries northward. By 1850, it had become one of America's largest cities with a population of over two thousand people. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was re-elected as US president and announced his intention to move the White House from Washington D.C., which then had an overwhelming African American majority due to slavery, to Montgomery, Alabama – then part of Virginia – so that all Americans could be represented equally before Congress under his new plan for Reconstruction. This would require congressional passage of legislation authorizing such an egalitarian move and local support; however, only five southern states ratified their own version of Reconstruction Legislation making it difficult for President Lincoln even to carry out his intentions without them (Alabama did not ratify).
