Birmingham, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 2,815 at the 2010 census. It is located on the mouth of the Mitten River, about south of Detroit and east of Ann Arbor. It has been an important center for trade and transportation since its founding as a fur-trading post by French traders in 1795. The city became a major American industrial center during World War II, outputting technologies such as radios, aircraft engines, tanks, and automobiles. Birmingham's economy began to decline after the war but has recovered since 2000. The first people to permanently settle in what is now Birmingham were French traders who discovered large amounts of iron ore near present day downtown in 1795. In 1802, John Jacob Astor founded Black Rock Copper Mining Company with his brother Edward Black and others to exploit this new discovery. The company built a mill on Battle Creek River which processed copper until 1835 when it merged into Scottish Mines Company (now known as Canadian Northern Railway). In 1836, John Sibley established Sibley & Co., one of several lumber dealers operating out of what is now downtown Birmingham while other business entrepreneurs such as Elijah White organized small businesses within existing streetscapes including Battle Creek Street (later renamed Commerce Street), Fourteenth Street NW (later renamed Alabama Avenue), New Market Road NW (now known as 21st Avenue NE), Spring Hill Avenue NW (now known as Gaylord Avenue NE), Packard Boulevard NW (now known as Enterprise Boulevard) and Vine Street SE (later renamed Martin Luther King Jr.] The growth of industry led to increased demand for workers and housing; however, social unrest often developed due to discrimination against African Americans by white businessmen who saw them only as cheap labor source rather than valuable citizens with families who could potentially have influenced public opinion or significantly contributed financially to their communities through political action or philanthropy
Birmingham was founded on November 1, 1817 by the United States as a town in the present-day Michigan Territory. The first post office was established in 1818. In 1827, the city became a part of the newly created Detroit Territory. In 1840, it became part of the Indiana Territory when that territory was organized. On January 17, 1849, Birmingham became an official U.S. city with its own government and flag.
