The Coast Guard in Birmingham, Michigan began as a small force that served the community during World War I. The Coast Guard was formed on July 1, 1914 when the US Congress passed the National Defense Act and authorized the President to establish a navy to supplement the Army. The first Coast Guard ship was built at Lake St. Clair Shipbuilding Company in Detroit, Michigan and commissioned on December 10, 1915. In 1919, the Coast Guard became an independent service within the Department of Commerce. On May 25, 1920, Rear Admiral Halsey Mears organized a flotilla of five vessels to patrol coastal waters off California’s coast. This event is considered to be one of the earliest manifestations of Coast Guard policing activity along America’s coastline. In 1923-1924, Rear Admiral Harry Waddell organized a squadron of six ships from New York City for duty along California’s coast. This event is also considered to be one of early manifestations of Auxiliary Sector law enforcement activity within America's coastline. In 1926-1927, Commodore John J C Brown activated three tankers with personnel and equipment for coastal patrols in support of Naval Search and Rescue operations during both world wars (WW1 & WW2). Commodore Brown posthumously received the Congressional Gold Medal for his work in providing this assistance to our Nation during those difficult times. Since its inception as a small force serving local communities during World War I through Auxiliary Sector law enforcement activities during both world wars (WW1 & WW2), it has become one of America’s leading emergency response organizations with over 350 years experience! Birmingham, Michigan is a small city located in the eastern portion of the state of Michigan. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. Birmingham is one of five cities in Muskegon County and the county seat. The city was founded in 1818 by General John L. Moore as a trading post on the Grand River between Detroit and Ann Arbor. In 1836, it became an incorporated town. In 1898, Birmingham became a charter city and it has been its own municipality since 1947. It is home to many high-tech companies, including Intel and AMD, as well as several hospitals, universities, and shopping malls.
The Coast Guard has been providing safety and assistance to the people of America since 1790. The Coast Guard is responsible for the transportation, security, and protection of our coastline and waters. In 1916, a group of amateur sailors created the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary to help support the Coast Guard in its efforts. Over time, the Auxiliary became more organized and professionalized. On May 15th, 1917, Congress passed an act establishing the United States Coast Guard Service as a separate branch of government with its own financial resources. The first officers were appointed on July 1st, 1917. The mission of the Service was amended in 1935 to include coastal defense purposes. By 1945, it had become one of America’s primary land-based military services. On November 5th, 1947, President Harry S Truman issued Executive Order 9650 which authorized donation by private individuals of items used or worn by members of the U.S. Coast Guards service during World War II (This order was later modified to allow gifts from states). On January 10th, 1948 President John F Kennedy announced that coast guard gift history would be documented through his Department’s History Office and that all memorabilia including uniforms could be donated at no cost to this office During 1957-1959 there was a large donation campaign for Christmas gifts for coast guard personnel This campaign resulted in over $200 thousand being collected It is now estimated that over 75% of all gifts given to coast guard personnel are either practical or sentimental In 1976-1978 donations reached 4 million dollars This number increased dramatically when Operation Homecoming was conducted which brought back memories of World War II For every dollar donated we received two cents in return We currently have over 20 million items on display at our museum located at Pearl Harbor In 1978 we also began accepting donations through mail After much research it was determined that most objects should not be displayed in public because they are too valuable To illustrate this point I will give you an example A item from our collection which has been on display for nearly forty years is a life jacket worn by First Lieutenant William “Gabby” Pyle When he fell overboard while training off California In 1938 A fundraising committee raised nearly $5000 For every life jacket given away we received $1 A large majority (87%)of all Gifts Given To Coastal Guards Personnel Are Practical And Sentimental

The population was 679,827 as of 2010, making it the second-largest city in Wayne County after Detroit. In 1835, twoand-a-half miles (5 kilometers) east of downtown Birmingham were built what are now Three Rivers Casino Resort and Convention Center and ArtPark USA – both owned by MGM Grand Entertainment Co., which opened in 2007 on what was then Old Main Street near Gadsden Hills High School – bringing gambling to southwest Michigan for the first time. The growth of motorsports during World War II led to increased business activity around downtown Birmingham including construction at Ladd–Peebles Stadium on November 8th 1942 by General Motors Limited Partnership effective upon its acquisition by Ford Motor Company from Chevrolet Motors Corporation as part of their wartime merger into Motor Division #5 beneath Ford subsidiary Henry Jaffe Productions Ltd.. After World War II ended, pollution problems caused closures during most years due to high levels of auto emissions coming out from various manufacturing plants until air quality improvements brought back full production by 2006…..During this time period significant development took place such as Fourth Street Baptist Church being built adjacent to Third Avenue South housing many African Americans who were leaving Jim Crow America…. Today's skyline can be seen looking down Fourth Street between Southside Drive and Rodney Road while continuing up Third Avenue South towards Interstate 75
