It borders Lansing to the north, Ann Arbor to the west, Detroit to the south and east, and Flint to the southeast. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Birmingham were French fur traders who traveled through what is today's downtown during 1694-95. The area was initially part of Indian Territory under British control until 1786 when it became part of Lower Michigan as part of Treaty 6 between Great Britain and France. In 1807, Battle Creek was founded as a trading post on Michilimackinac River by General David Dunlap in anticipation of an American invasion that never occurred. The town was named for Brigadier General John Brown who fought in that battle at Fort Dearborn on July 10, 1807 against Napolean Bonaparte's forces while still a colonel in British service. At that time Fort Dearborn consisted only of a small stockade with nine cannon batteries built by Major James Wilkinson near present-day Goodyear Street and Brush Avenue back then it also served primarily as a military depot for supplying duties alongthe Canada–US border during this period In 1824, when MIAs passed through Washtenaw County on their way from Mackinac Island to Upper Peninsula communities such as Green Bay or Chicago they stopped at Goodyear Lake where they erected a small fortification known as "The Black Fortress" which served as their headquarters while passing through this area In 1827 Battle Creek became incorporated as a village after winning approval from the Michigan Legislature following deliberations over several months It wasn't until 1830 that Battle Creek obtained its own courthouse which seated three judges instead of just two due to space limitations within then existing government buildings Battle Creek experienced rapid growth following its incorporation with businesses opening up including: A hotel (later renamed), grocery store (later renamed), livery stable (now known as First State Livery). This growth continued into into annexed Ann Arbor where business owners opened up new properties including: A cotton gin (1830), bakery (1831), flour mill(1832) & sawmill(1834). By 1840 there were 30 businesses operating in Battle Creek with an estimated 2,500 residents During this time other towns across lower Michigan began experiencing similar levels of prosperity becoming incorporated including: Traverse City (1835), Marquette(1836), Ionia Heights(1838) & Delta Township (1840) but ultimately all these towns lost their charters or failed to keep up with sufficient economic development leading to their dissolution
